  3. Sarah, our sincerest sympathies. Max was a great friend and colleague to us at Empire Machinery & Tools in Winnipeg. Max dealt with Empire’s former owner Mel Manishen for years and I have “worked with” Max for at least 20 years, as an employee of Empire Sheet Metal and then as an owner of Empire Machinery. I never met Max in person in all that time but I did know his voice! His faxes always had smiley faces (or frowns depending on the message!). He talked me into sending him one of our promotional free t-shirts last year and then sent us pictures of him on a street in Portugal wearing it! (I would be happy to send them to you if you would like.) He was a very sincere and honest man – from a hard-working generation (…often didn’t check e-mails and wanted things on the fax!). He was a pleasure to work with. He told me about your wedding too – that was a great time for him. Our sympathies to you and your family – we will miss him. As per your wishes, a donation will be made to The Mustard Seed in his name.

I have known Max for most of my life, we had stayed in touch with each other all through the years, in our youth as boyfriend and girlfriend, than as brother-in-law and finally and most importantly as a dear friend, his passing was such a shock and I will miss our chats, his cards, e-mails and silly jokes. My deepest sympathies to Sarah and her husband and to Max’s siblings. He will be greatly missed.
