September 14, 1924 – January 1, 2013
Lionel Schneider, born in Cape Town, South Africa on September 14, 1924, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 1, 2013/Tevet 19, 5773.
Lionel’s life was filled with service to people and causes dear to him. As a very young man, he fought courageously with the allied forces in the Second World War. He later served in the fledgling Israeli Air Force, during which time he met his beloved wife, Margot. Lionel and Margot raised two daughters in Johannesburg, and in 1977 they immigrated to Calgary, Alberta where they became involved in the Calgary Jewish Community. Lionel was passionate about his family. He loved to golf and was an avid woodworker who contributed his projects to anyone or any group who was in need.
His sweet smile will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his beloved wife, Margot of 62 years, loving daughters Lindy Shortt (Stan), Michelle Yellin (Allan), grandchildren Talia Crystal (Matt), Ari Shortt (Eva), Lisa Yellin (Jason Zalmanowitz), Mark Shortt and Elisheva Shortt, and great- grandchildren Naomi and Jonah Crystal. May his memory be a blessing. Our deepest gratitude goes to the loving and caring staff of the Beverley Care Centre.
Funeral Services will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel and Cemetery (North East Corner of Highway 22X & 37th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, (today) January 3, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Shiva will take place at 364 Pump Hill Gardens S.W., Calgary on Thursday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 4:30 p.m., Monday and Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
