Sorry to learn of Erika’s passing. We were neighbors but are away for the winter. She was very determined and active up until the last year with her daily walks to the park. She was an inspiration to maintaining activity as long as possible. Our sincere condolences.

  7. Al and Stephanie Blackbird :

    Hello Werner,
Please accept our sincerest apologies as we too far away to attend today. Please know that Erika will always be in our hearts, we loved having her in our lives and enjoyed each and every visit with her. Every time we went to see her, she just lit up and said “The Blackbirds are here!” As much as we looked for our move to Scottsdale, we were saddest to leave Erika – we told her we would kidnap her and take her with us and she giggled 🙂

We shared some very precious moments with her and sure enjoyed the stories that she shared with us. I spent many times with her sweeping and shovelling her walk, until it was up to snuff. She made us laugh many times and we always knew she would brighten up our day. She really enjoyed the soups and snacks that we would take to her.
She sure had a sweet tooth. She loved Berries too and of course “Boston Pizza”.

She told us her nick name was “Schmitty”, so we teasingly called her that. Yes, she shared some of her special times with us. We were so “honoured” that she shared her special moments with us. There was one day that I visited her, but she was “sound” asleep. She would often say how much she just enjoyed her afternoon naps. So, I did not wake her-I just stayed there and just sat with her and closed my eyes. She was sleeping so peacefully, and I did not want to interrupt her sleep. This is just one of our special visits with her. But, when we were all there together, we would just talk & talk. She was very special to us. She was a true friend, neighbor and we are so glad that we were able to be close to her. In a certain special way-we both took her in as our grandmother-so I hope you don’t mind that we did. Both Steph and I lost our mothers several years. ago. So, there was that certain emptiness in our lives and we found that Erika was that very special person to admire.

Most importantly – She was very proud of her Family. She spoke of you all often. She bragged about you Werner, how you were such a good son, and she was very proud of Helga and her career.

Werner, we are so Grateful to you & your family that Erika was in our lives. Thank You for allowing US to be there with Erika in those special times. Please let your family know that we Loved her dearly. You are all so very lucky that she was there for you, and that she did live a Long & Happy life. We are very blessed to have known her, and her spirit will remain with us for ever.

Our Sympathy and Condolences to you and your family.
    Al & Stephanie Blackbird
