Duane Allan Schmeeckle passed away peacefully at the Chinook Hospice in Calgary, Alberta, on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in his 90th year.
Duane was born on April 3, 1920, in Eustis, Nebraska, and spent his childhood years in New Raymer, Colorado and Cozad, Nebraska. After high school, Duane attended the University of Nebraska before joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in June, 1942, serving in Europe until the end of World War II. Duane completed his B.Sc. (Mechanical Engineering) in 1947 and joined Shell Oil. He worked in the U.S. Gulf Coast area and eventually relocated with Shell to Alberta, Canada. He married Barbara Sparrow on April 7, 1956, in Calgary, where they raised their six children. Duane pursued a career in private business, founding Petro-Automation Industries in 1957. It evolved into Cantech Corporation, which continued for many years as a national instrumentation and control company based in Calgary. After the sale of Cantech in 1998, he remained active in business with Nextron Corporation, a public company, until 2007.
Duane was an active member of the Rotary Club of Calgary East. He was committed to their service activities, including projects such as Rotary Challenger Park and the Rotary Clock on International Avenue. He also spent many hours volunteering for various community and charitable activities. Duane was an enthusiastic supporter of the International Avenue BRZ, Heritage Park, Telus Science Centre, St. Mary’s University College, and other non-profit groups. He was a member of the Calgary Petroleum Club, the Glencoe Club, the Glencoe Golf & Country Club, the Instrument Society of America and the Probus Club.
Duane is survived by his loving wife Barbara and their children Mark Schmeeckle, Jan (Mark) Herman, Lynn (Phil) van Steenburgh, Karen (Andrew) Serafini, Paula (Paul) Ackerley, and Steve (Anita) Schmeeckle. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Samantha, Matthew, Steven, and Spencer Herman; Liam and Katharine van Steenburgh; Paul, John, Peter, Mary, Teresa, and Michael Serafini (and their half-sister Annie Woods and her husband Andrew Cornett); Aidan and Shane Ackerley; and Nolan and Vivian Schmeeckle. He is also survived by his sister Ruth (Schmeeckle) Bischoff and her husband Bob Bischoff, sister-in-law Gretchen Schmeeckle, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in the United States and Canada. Duane was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Louise Schmeeckle, brothers Willis and Mark Schmeeckle, and Willis’ wife Lynn.

Special thanks to Unit 73 at the Rockyview Hospital, and to Dr. Radinskaia and all of the staff at the Chinook Hospice, whose compassionate care made Duane’s final days as comfortable and peaceful as possible.
