Dear Family and Friends of Hugo: I am so sad and shocked to hear that Hugo passed-away on Monday. I offer you my prayers and deepest sympathy at this very difficult time. I had the pleasure of knowing Hugo when I lived in Calgary (both at work with Colt Engineering/WorleyParsons and through playing rugby.) Hugo was a fair and honest person who defended his corner well, both at work and on the playing field, and we could finish with a cup of coffee or a beer. He was endowed with good, practical commonsense and a good sense of humour. RIP big fella.

His sudden departure leaves a large emptiness in our hearts…as it must in yours as well. We will miss his presence, his smile and his sincere and kind interest in all those around him. Heather and Family,
I knew Hugo well in the fun formative years of the Colt Pipelines group but our paths diverged some years ago until out of the blue I got a call from him in Johannesburg when we were both there at the same time. Hugo was the dedicated, reliable and highly principled guy with the big smile on his face and the quick laugh who was always fun to be around. The world is a bit poorer place for his passing.

  19. Jennifer Day :

I met Hugo many years ago while working in pipelines. Soon after, he would start a new department and become my “Boss”. I would never call him “Hugo” again. For 8 years we worked side by side and faced many challenges together, both personally and professionally. He was a trusted friend. Even after his departure from the company we worked at together, we remained in touch, and I still called him “Boss”.

Boss: You know my heart aches knowing we won’t laugh together again in this life. I will miss those out-of-the-blue phone calls to check in on me. Thank you for all you brought to my life. For taking me under your wing, supporting me, and always believing in me. I was lucky to have you as my mentor all those years.

To Heather, the kids, and family: It’s a big loss, and your hearts must be broken, honour those tender spaces. Please know I’m holding you all in my thoughts.

Hugo and I became friends through work, I appreciated his words and his analogies about being part of the Inukshuk of work.

Hugo always told me he viewed life through a camera lens. Hugo said he focused on what was important, he captured the good times, developed from the negatives and if things didn’t work out he took another shot.

I will miss you Hugo, but I know you will be with us all, watching our adventures through the beautiful lens of your camera.

  24. To Heather, family and friends
A colleague, friend and outstanding man known by many to be rooted in his principles particularly for the benefit of so many in our industry. People in HSE are so often measured by their work by a company’s performance and prevention of injuries and accidents, however I believe Hugo was about the immeasurable safety of all personnel where just one life saved, who knows how many of those events could have occurred during Hugo’s watch. You will be sadly missed our friend, but your legacy will carry on with so many. I’ll particularly miss Hugo on the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer ride this year, however to be truthful who could ever keep up with his pace? I wish I could be there on Monday to share our stories and Hugo with our pipeline friends, please raise a glass for me in his honour and memory.

My sincerest condolences Heather to you and your families. Hugo was a great guy to have worked with; trying to be tough but with a heart as big as the moon. He always made time to stop by and offer a wide smile and sometimes a great joke (and of course keeping you up on safety tips). Having gone through the same thing (almost 6 years ago), I know exactly what you are going through Heather and my shoulder is always here for you.
