SCHAINK, Andrea “Frances” (nee Türcke)

February 4, 1952 – Montreal, Quebec
July 4, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Frances Schaink was born on February 4, 1952 in Montreal, Canada. Her parents named her Andrea Frances Türcke, but she always went by her middle name. She went to school in Sorel and Montreal with her older sisters Katherine (Niki) and Leslie. She attended MacDonald College at McGill University and completed her degree in Horticulture in 1974. Frances’ love of travel and adventure saw her attend a German course at the Goethe institute in Passau, Germany in 1976. She then travelled around Europe visiting her classmates from the Goethe Institute. One of her adventures, in August 1976, took her on the Ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki where she met her soul mate, Hendrik. They were married on October 13, 1977 and lived in Zurich until they moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1981. They had their first child, Jessica, in July 1982 while Hendrik was studying at the University of Alberta. In 1985 they moved to Calgary which would become their long-term home. 1986 brought the birth of Alexis, just two days after Frances’ 34th birthday. The family moved to their home in Ranchlands the following year, and that remains the family home to this day. Frances worked at the Calgary Public Library and cherished the support it gave the local community and the very special friends she made at work. She took great joy in cultivating and tending her garden and then spending time sitting outside surrounded by the beauty of it. Her love of travel and adventure was ever present and after retirement she and Hendrik enjoyed wonderful trips to Peru, Thailand, Europe, and many places across Canada.

Frances is survived by her husband Hendrik, daughters Jessica and Alexis, and her sisters Niki and Leslie.

Frances was predeceased by her parents Katherine and Peter Türcke.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells., Calgary, AB), on Monday, July 9, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.

Condolence Messages

  1. Dear Hendrik, Jessica and Alexis;
    I am sorrier than I can properly express for the loss of Frances. Your family has been the best of neighbours to my family – always cheerful and caring. It was always a pleasure to stop and greet each other in “the Mews” as we came and went from our daily activities. Please accept my sympathy. I grieve with you.

    Dear Hendrik
    We met Frances only once through our dear Robin as we received a very warm welcome on a very hot day in July as they all moved to Calgary. But I really know through her how special Frances was. We grieve with you and pray you will receive all that you need now and in the days to come.

    Lieve Hendrik. Tot mijn grote schrik hoorde ik vanavond van mijn zus Mieneke dat jouw lieve vrouw Francis vorige week is overleden, als gevolg van een afschuwelijk ongeval. ik heb Francis maar 1x ontmoet: op de 90e verjaardag van jouw moeder- tante Corrie- maar toen heeft zij wel een speciale indruk bij mij achtergelaten. Een hele bijzondere en lieve vrouw, zoals nu ook blijkt uit de levensbeschrijving, die hierboven van Francis is gegeven. Ik wens jou heel veel sterkte en Troost toe bij dit grote verlies. ik denk aan jou in mijn gebeden. heel veel liefs van je nicht Tosca Roering.
