SAWATZKY, Elizabeth (Betty)

April 3, 1924 – November 22, 2012

Elizabeth Sawatzky, beloved wife of Henry Sawatzky, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at the age of 88 years.

Born of Mennonite heritage in 1924, Elizabeth Sawatzky (née Reimer) immigrated to Canada from Ukraine with her parents in 1927 and spent her childhood years on a farm near Glidden, SK. Growing up in a remote community led her to discover the magic of a stamp at an early age and she developed her story-telling talents through letter-writing. In 1948, Elizabeth attained her R.N. from Saskatoon City Hospital and married Henry Sawatzky. Together they raised four children and Elizabeth enjoyed a nursing career for the next three decades. They savoured all aspects of prairie life and Henry’s involvement with the oil industry took them across southern Saskatchewan and eventually from Regina to Calgary in 1969. Elizabeth wrote award-winning poetry and short stories. She loved to travel, golf, work on needlecraft and, most of all, spend time with friends and family, especially at the Columbia Lake cottage.

Elizabeth died peacefully with grace and dignity surrounded by her loving family, and much support from extended family and friends. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her devoted husband, Henry, and their children, Allan (Dale) Sawatzky, Neil (Linda) Sawatzky, Lorette (John) Clow, and Dianne Sawatzky (Jim Bland); grandchildren, Cathy Powell, Allison Sawatzky, Amy Sawatzky, Katy (Lyle) Jobe, Laura Sawatzky, Heather (James) Nickel, Jeff (Evie) Sawatzky, Erin Sawatzky, Angie Sawatzky (Patrick Andrews), Jennifer (Matt) Pyatt, Steven (Heather) Clow; Greg Bland, (Jennae McMillan), Paul Murphy, Richard Bland, and Colleen Murphy; and great-grandchildren, Serena, Logan, Eli, Kara, Jordan, Mikaela, Jacob, Luke, and Katie.

A Celebration of Elizabeth’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In appreciation of the exceptional care provided by the Foothills and Rockyview hospitals, donations may be made in Elizabeth’s name to Calgary Health Trust, Suite 800, 11012 MacLeod Trail S.E., Calgary, AB T2J 6A5, Telephone: (403)943-0615, www.thetrust.ca.

In living memory of Elizabeth Sawatzky, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Auntie Betty was a sweet lady with a great sense of humour and infectious laugh. I remember when I first moved to Calgary and she sent me some hand knitted kitchen cloths. It meant a lot to me that she wanted me to have those. I am so sorry for your loss. She will be missed greatly. Love Jennifer

  3. John and Helen Reimer :

Our children Mark and Shauna from Montreal spent last week with us and while here we enjoyed watching the video taken at our 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2000. Among other entertainment we once again enjoyed a poem specially composed for ‘John and Helen’ by Betty, which she recited. Henry held the mic for her. We shall all miss her.

My Mom was Molly Enns (nee Dyck) she was a a friend of Betty’s when they were young – I believe Betty might have been Mom’s bridesmaid in 1946. When Mom died in 1996, Betty sent a lovely condolence letter to me. As soon as I saw the picture in the Saskatoon Star, I knew who she was. So sorry for your loss. Vicky Brose
