December 31, 1931 – November 19, 2012
Heaven just announced that Elda has arrived to share in joy, happiness, good fun and laughter.
Elda was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Roy and Margaret Van Blaricom nee Benson on New Year’s Eve. Elda loved a party and every year, everyone celebrated her birthday. Elda’s first job was a telephone operator and it seemed like she knew everyone in Saskatchewan.
Elda met Stanley Peter Sawatske and they married 60 years ago on July 5, 1952. Together, they had two children, Margaret (1953) and Jim (1954). A decision to move to Calgary in 1963 came about and Elda, the homemaker was busy with Newcomers, curling, bridge, knitting, crocheting, playing her keyboard and camping. When the kids flew the coop, Elda took a business course and she found a position at the Chamber of Commerce as the office manager. Absolutely loved being on call for a good joke from the numerous media, members and staff who got to know Elda. Early retirement found Elda and Stan becoming Snowbirds. They headed south to Yuma, Arizona the day after Thanksgiving and coming back in time for their income tax in April. Fifteen years they made this trek to Arizona and then one day they decided to stay in Canada. The Sawatske’s were Good Sam RV founding members and they loved camping and attending Samborees with their friends. For the genealogical history buffs, Elda is a descendent of the United Empire Loyalists on the Van Blaricom family tree.
Elda leaves behind her husband, Stan, her daughter Margaret Livingston (Jim) and son, Jim (Diane) Sawatske; three Livingston grandsons, Rob( Jodi), Brett (Erin) and Stuart; two granddaughters, Krysta and Katie Sawatske; three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Tayah and Dylan; her sister, Menitha Fitzsimmons (87) Regina, Saskatchewan and her brother, Bill Van Blaricom (85) Craven Saskatchewan and their families.
