SARUGA – Barbara (nee Tivadar)

SARUGA, BARBARA (nee Tivadar), after 99 fruitful years, Barbara passed away peacefully on Monday, November 15, 2010 at the George Boyack Nursing Home attended to by her loving family.

She was born in Lipa, Slovenia, worked in France as a teenager to send money home and fled Europe by herself prior to Second World War. She travelled across Canada to Medicine Hat where she married William on Valentines Day in 1939. Together they started homesteading in the Vauxhall area working as partners, driving tractors, putting in crops and raising livestock. They had an idyllic family farm, complete with red barn and white fence, tall crops and lush flowers and vegetable gardens, prized poultry and the sweetest corn. They were proud and loving parents to their three daughters. In 1963, they retired to enjoy Calgary and travelled extensively in both Europe and the United States. They were active both at St. Mary’s Cathedral and their final parish, St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church. Barbara remained independently active into her 90’s, travelling and cruising extensively with her daughter Ann, her best friend and constant companion. She was a kind, gentle and loving lady, always with an eye for beauty, never complaining, loved and cherished by all.

Barbara is survived by three daughters Margaret Esson (Lindsay), Mary Horvat and Ann Dorn (Edd McRory) and four grandchildren, Barbara Marks (Maury), Douglas Esson (Susan), Sandra (Kelly) Toole and Michael Horvat and five great-grandchildren, Jenna and Laura, Ian, and Daniel and Vanessa, and many relatives in Solvenia.

She was predeceased by her husband William (1978) and her son-in-law Bill Dorn (1980).

  1. Cecile Bulva (nee Spilak) :

I have always had the greatest regard for Mrs. Saruga ( as I was always taught to address her – never Barbara. Even today that sticks. I grew up on a farm just a few miles from the Saruga farm and we made frequest visits with our families usually on sundays. No one worked on sundays then and somehow we still always got the crops in and made a decent living. Maybe even a better living. How things have changed. Not sure that puts us ahead or very behind. The future is yet to be known. Mrs. Saruga was my Godmother and every Christmas and birthday she remembered with either a special doll or a silver dollar. That special memory remains with me even to this day – her generosity and very caring personality shone with every visit. Her obituary says it all.I wish I could make it down for this special funeral to say goodbye but since I am still working and my days are booked solid I will not be able to join you in person but will be there in spirit and in my heart I remember and cherish such wonderful times. From the common phone line to the toppling of the bales – many many memories to cherish. My deepest condolences to Margaret, Mary & Ann and your families- on your loss and may all the wonderful memories help you to go forward and continue on the paths that you have chosen for your lives. Though we live far apart now- our childhood memories will be forever in our hearts.

    To the Saruga family,

Our deepest sympathy to the Saruga family during this difficult time. She was a wonderful and delightful lady to have met and known. She always had a smile on her face whenever she greeted you. Whenever Lea called Barbara to help with the C.W.L., she didn’t hesitate to come and lend a hand. We always enjoyed her beautiful baking, especially when we had the bake sale and potluck dinner. Whenever we walked past her home when we went to St. Anthony’s Church, we loved looking and admiring her beautiful garden. She will truly be missed.
