August 28, 1917 – October 1, 2012
Phyllis Sargent of Calgary passed away peacefully at Aspen Lodge at the age of 95.
She was born in England, raised in Montreal and Ontario, where, at age 19, she worked as a telegraph operator for CNR. She lived in Ontario, raised her family in RCAF bases across Canada, and in 1967 settled in Calgary, where she worked as a librarian. Phyllis lived a full and vibrant life. She skied in the Laurentians as a young girl and in the Rocky Mountains as a senior. She raced her hyrdroplane, “The Phyllis M” roaring in to win the silver cup, at Picton Ont. Her love of adventure and nature took her camping all over North America. Although she travelled to other parts of the world, she was especially drawn to the ruggedness of Yukon and Alaska. She liked animals; wolves and whales held a special interest for her. She also enjoyed a lifelong long of classical music. Over the years, Phyllis returned to the family cottage in Ont, with her children and her grandchildren. She loved travelling by train across Canada to celebrate special moments with her family, until she was no longer able to. So many good memories of a woman with strength, determination, a great sense of humour and a zest for life. We hope we’ve inherited some of those genes.
Phyllis is survived by her four children, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
There have been numerous individuals who helped Phyllis over the past few years. Thank you to Dr. John Van Olm, to the caring staff at Aspen Lodge and last but not least to family, extended family and friends whose kindness meant so much to Phyllis.
The family will privately celebrate her life at a later date.
