SAMPSON, Donald James “Don”

November 4, 1929 – Edmonton, AB
January 10, 2015 – Calgary, AB

Donald James Sampson was born November 4th 1929 and died January 10th 2015 at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary. Son of Alfred Sampson and Mabel Potts and brother to sisters Phyllis and Islay, Don grew up in the small Albertan towns of Pickardville, Boyle, Cherhill and Entwhistle. He studied Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

After graduating in 1953, Don married Evelyn Anders, and they set off from Edmonton to Chicago where he obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago, and where son Michael James was born. From there the family moved to Toronto where Don worked for US Gypsum, and where son Russell Dean was born. Shortly thereafter they moved to Winnipeg where he worked for the engineering firm T. Lamb McManus, and where son Timothy John was born. After spending the 1960’s in Winnipeg the family moved to Calgary in 1971 where he headed T. Lamb McManus, and discovered the joys of skiing.

Retiring in the fall of 1986, Ev and Don moved to Victoria B.C. where they built a home and a small paradise on ten acres. In addition to skiing, Don was an avid golfer, enjoyed tennis, played hockey, and played and coached baseball. His warm laughter lasted until the end. He will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Survived by his loving wife Evelyn, son Michael and wife Gabriele, son Timothy, and son Russell, predeceased by Russell’s wife Susan. Donald is also survived by sister Islay and her husband Barry, and predeceased by his sister Phyllis. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
