RYAN, Michael T.

May 22, 1953 – May 16, 2013

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Michael Thomson Ryan on May 16, 2013, just days short of his 60th birthday.

Michael was born in Calgary and attended Bishop Grandin High School. He received his B.Sc. and B. Comm. from the University of Calgary. He articled with Coopers and Lybrand and received his Chartered Accountant designation. Michael was President and owner of Trotter and Morton, a successful commercial construction company that prospered under his vision.

Michael loved travelling and was very interested in Canadian and American history. His trips took him into Australia, Europe, South America, Middle East, Antarctica, Seychelles, and many North American destinations, however his property in paradise was his farm near Rosebud, Alberta. Michael was an avid skier and hockey player, and he loved his chocolate. But his greatest passion was fishing. You could find him enjoying his favorite pastime on the nearest stream, lake or ocean.

Michael was a kind man, quiet and private, compassionate and sympathetic towards the less fortunate. He was a loving, supportive father who always encouraged his children to succeed in their interests and endeavors. Even in his failing health, he had a sense of humor and a smile for everyone.

Michael is survived by his loving wife Lucia and their daughter Nya; his older children: Lana Thomson (Matt), Karen McNerney (Tom), Kelly Ryan, and one grandson Spencer Thomson. He is also survived by his brothers: Paul (Linda), Jay, David (Teresa); his sister Jane; his nieces Gabriela, Olivia, and Apoline Ryan; and nephews Patrick, William, and Matthew Rooney.

He is predeceased by his parents Mona and John Ryan.

The family would like to thank all of Michael’s caregivers who kindly and patiently looked after him during his long illness. Many thanks to all the friends who generously gave their time and support to both Michael and Lucia.

In lieu of flowers If friends so desire, donations may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Provincial Office, Sun Life Place, 710, 10123 – 99th Street, Edmonton, AB T5J 3H1 Telephone: 1(866) 412-4222.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at MCINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, Alberta) on Tuesday May 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Anthony’s Catholic Church (5340 – 4th Street S.W.) on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service will follow at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com

    To the Ryan Family,
It was with great sadness that I learnt of Michael’s passing. Your family was very close to our family and I can recall babysitting all of you guys during my teenage years. I often regret being so far away from Calgary and having been unable to stay in contact. I wish for your entire family God’s blessings and comfort, and I wish you all many years of continuing happiness. Please convey my best wishes to: Paul, Jay, David, Teresa and Jane.
    Sincerely, Robert Bourque “from Barbados”

  12. Barbara Quinn & Rosalind Anderson (Thomas) :

Rosalind and I have so many wonderful memories of Christmases together: Figgy pudding (not plum because of allergies), Cowboys and Indians, (a real treat for two girls!), and summers of house boating, Blue Water Lodges – I am sure our parents, the best of friends, would have wished a marriage between families. What happened?? Loved you all! Jane, our Mum’s favorite, David her Godson, Jay our Best Man, Paul Rosalind’s intended, and Michael- fishing with you was Gwyn’s (our father’s) passion!
    Hugs. R. & B.

  14. I was shocked to just hear of Mike’s passing as he and I were contemporaries going way back. Please accept condolences from all the cousins in Toronto in the McLean, Allen and Williams families. While up there say hi Mike to old Mrs. Nicolson who gave us the strap at St. Anthony’s in Grade 2 for something I don’t remember.
