September 7, 1919 – Regina, Saskatchewan
August 6, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Together we mourn the passing of our beloved mother, stepmother, grandmother, aunt and friend at the age of 97 years.

Jean was predeceased by her first husband, John Ryan (January, 1987), and her second husband, Robert (Bob) MacLean (April, 2013). Jean is survived by her three children, Deborah Ryan-Maybury (Bruce), Timothy Ryan (Jen) and Gregory Ryan (Michele); five grandchildren, Megan, Laura, Luke, Braden and Adam; and two stepchildren, Jamie MacLean (Bev) and Heather McLeod. Jean’s six brothers and sisters all predeceased her.

Jean was born in Regina Saskatchewan, not long after her parents John Burns Wilson and Janet Ann (Thomson) immigrated to Canada from Scotland. She attended Scott Collegiate High School, and gained a measure of local fame as both a red-haired beauty and an accomplished singer in her youth. Throughout her life, she demonstrated a passion for music and things artful and aesthetically pleasing. Jean possessed a spirited and intuitive sense of style, always sporting the latest fashions. She was known as ‘Hollywood’ at the assisted living facility where she resided in the past few years.

Jean’s love of home design was evidenced by the homes she built and meticulously decorated in Regina, Edmonton and Sherwood Park, Alberta. She was an amazing cook, and her family and friends are blessed to have memories of her apple pie, spaghetti and chocolate-bar cake that will last a lifetime. She also loved to garden and her green thumb was hard to match.

One of her greatest gifts to her children and others was instilling in them the belief that anything could be accomplished. Tilting her head with a piercing gaze, she would assert, “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.”

Jean was the driving force behind Ryan’s Fabrics, a business that enjoyed many successful years of operation in Sherwood Park. She also enjoyed an accomplished career in real estate until the age of 75.

After Jean’s first husband John died in 1986 (ALS), Jean married Bob MacLean, in 1994, and they then enjoyed sharing their love and passion for life for 20 years of independent living.
We would particularly like to acknowledge April Bobias, Shirley Ayudoc, Lerma Chua and Maan Romquiza who provided love and caring support as Jean’s “companions” for the past several years.

A life well lived. May you rest in peace Jeannie, Jeansie, Red, Mom, Grandme…we will always miss you and your fierce love.

A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through
