  6. From September 1978 through June 1986, Laurette Roth played a prominent role in the life of the Foran Family. Mme. Roth was the ECS teacher at Ecole St. Luke where the three Foran kids were happily enrolled. Her inaugural morning class in 1978 consisted predominantly of wild, first-born boys who would have driven her mad had not the afternoon class consisted mostly of sweet, obedient girls. Poor Laurette! Yet she always managed to bring calm to chaos – by her gentle command for seated silence “sur le tapis” to her later ‘two claps followed by the visual signal to close eyes, lay head on arms and be quiet’. Kind, capable, conscientious and brave, Mme. Roth was a significant role model. In recent years, we rejoiced seeing her photo in the Calgary Herald. She was grinning with joy, high atop a mountain, triumphant with her fellow hikers. Rest in Peace, Laurette Roth. You are remembered so fondly. The Foran Family

  8. I am very sorry that Laurette has left us. I spent a week hiking with her on the West Coast Trail and formed a bond with her and the group. I have hiked with Laurette over the years and always enjoyed her sense of adventure and humour. My nickname for her was ‘Hollywood’ which she acquired due to finding a pair (or two) of sunglasses on the WCT after loosing hers. She looked like a movie star!! Going to miss her!! Our prayers and thoughts go to her and all her friends and family. Sincerely, Mike and Linda Rainey, Prairie Mountaineer Hikers.

Adieu la belle Laurette! I worked with Laurette at Ecole Holy Name School during her first principalship. She worked so hard that year! 15. Rich and Eve White :

We extend Laurette’s children, siblings and grand-children our most heart-felt condolences. Your Laurette initially charmed us by her warm personality, she then informed us about the 2nd60s Outdoor Club and sponsored us to become members. Her joy, energy and enthusiasm for strenuous outdoor pursuits and her aliveness in the fresh mountain air was inspiring and contageous. I’ll particularly always remember our hike together to the summit of Mt. Allan. For Club socials Laurette always presented herself in adorable finery and endeared herself to all with her warmth and friendly smile and hospitality, and usually she was one of the planners and involved in coordinating these events. We loved her ever so much and during these past two years prayed regularly that God would sustain her cheery outlook and give her grace, courage and strength in the battle she was waging. She blessed our lives.

    Michelle, Nathan and Monique:

Your Mom was such a great hiker and skiier and always looked like she was just enjoying every minute of it. I was happy to hike with her on occasion but she was way too fast for me so she would go with much faster people in the club. That did not ever stop her from being so gentle and kind with everyone however.
I am sure you will find comfort in the fact that your Mom had a very good life and people loved her and admired her.
Good wishes to all of you.

  18. Joyce Crawford :

Laurette was my friend and confidante in the mid 70s until the mid 80s when I moved from Calgary. During this period we were, with our children, struggling with our new status as single parents. We shared sorrows and joys: camping holidays in Laurette’s tent camper, milestone events such as our first “singles” dance at St. Mary’s Catholic hall, Theatre Calgary season tickets, and many holiday dinners. Over the years we maintained Christmas contact, and enjoyed sporadic visits when we found ourselves in the same province. I was not aware she had been ill, and was shocked to hear she had left us. My prayers are with her family – she left a legacy of strength and will be missed by all who knew her.

When I joined the Second Sixties Outdoor Club almost ten years ago, Laurette was the person I wanted to be — beautiful, vivacious, strong, stylish, smart, invariably kind and always helpful. These qualities continued to shine through during her recent illness, and she was a real inspiration. My condolences to her family. I know she will be missed, but I hope you will treasure many wonderful memories.

  26. I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to Laurette’s family. I had the chance to teach with her almost 30 years ago, at St.Luke School. When she applied to teach at a different school, I did the same just so I could follow her. She was a fantastic teacher who became a great mentor and friend. I will always have a special place in my heart for Laurette. I thought of her on November 2nd but I couldn’t remember what made me think of her. When I saw her picture in the newspaper, I knew why…I know that in time, your pain will diminish and you will cherish all the precious time you had with her.
    Sincerely,
Lyne Lappin & family (Roy, Sarah and Alexandra)
