ROSS, Susan Louise (nee Pepall)

January 10, 1937 – December 2, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce our mother, grandmother and friend Susan Louise Ross passed away peacefully on Friday, December 2, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Susan will be greatly missed by her children Monty (Christine), Drew (Sarah), and Sandra (Pat) and her grandchildren Jessica, Isobel, Kate, Hilary, Bob, Lucy and Bea, and countless friends.

Susan was born in Toronto, raised in Montreal and educated at Bishops University. After moving to Calgary in 1967 and completing her BLS at the University of Alberta in 1975 she enjoyed a long career as a law librarian.

Notwithstanding being predeceased by her husband in 1975 and raising three children on her own, Susan’s zest for life and positive demeanour endeared her to a great many people. She will always be remembered as a spunky, no-nonsense woman with a great spirit. She had the uncanny ability to have a wide variety of friends from a broad diversity of backgrounds and interests. She was always interested in other people’s thoughts and perspectives. Susan was extremely bright, with a keen wit and incredible sense of humor. She was a loving mother and grandmother and her wonderful sense of fun and adventure will be missed. She made the most of her last few years spending time walking beautiful beaches, exploring some of the world’s great cities and cultures, and enjoying her friends and family.

Susan and her family would like to thank their supportive circle of friends for their love, encouragement and time. No words can adequately express Susan’s gratitude for the wonderful Dr. Ghatage and the Gynecological Oncology team, the Medical Day Care Unit staff who saw her through an astonishing 65 rounds of chemotherapy, Brian at Paragon Pharmacy, the staff at Unit 42, the Palliative Care team, and lastly the amazing people at Agapé Hospice.

A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at The Glencoe Club (636 – 29 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, December 12, 2011 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made in Susan’s name to Ovarian Cancer Canada, www.ovariancanada.org.
Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Susan Ross, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200.

Offer Condolence for the family of ROSS, Susan Louise (nee Pepall)

I met Susan only briefly as she was already on leave when I joined TransCanada, but I gathered from others as well what a remarkable woman she was. Know that her name lives on, in high regard, in the TransCanada legal department. I am sorry that I didn’t have more of an opportunity to work with her, and I wish you all strength in dealing with your loss.

I have been blessed to know Susan for the last 19 years, first at Bennett Jones and then at TransCanada. I will always remember her fantastic sense of humour, her spunk and the fact that she seemed to know the answer to everything – she truly impacted many both personally and professionally. My thoughts are with you all, and I hope all the great memories will help you to get through this difficult time.

  4. Dear Monty, Drew, Sandra and families,
I was saddened to see the news of your mother’s passing in the Globe. Although I never had the opportunity of meeting her, I know how dear she was to her late sister (in spite of everything!) and the respect and affection my late mother-in-law, Laura Legge, had for her.
My condolences on behalf of myself, my husband, John Legge and the entire firm of Legge & Legge.

  10. Phyllis Thornton :

I met Susan when she was at Montreal Engineering and continued to cross paths with her at various times throughout our working lives. She was fun to be around and as she grew older became a role model of how to be an active, involved senior citizen (although I never thought of her as one). I will miss her. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of her family.

Wonderful memories will stay with all of us who were fortunate enough to have Susan touch our lives. As a BLS classmate I’ve been lucky to stay in touch through various libraries – I’ll remember most Susan’s enthusiasm, intelligence, smile and friendship. My warm thoughts to her family at this time of loss

  14. Alan and Jean Hollingworth :

I (Alan) met Susan when she worked at Code Hunter. She was always interesting, witty and insightful. Chats with her were always interesting and difficult to keep short. Jean met her at a party hosted by our friends and neighbours, Carol and (the late) Paul Marshall, and had the same impressions. After Susan went on to other firms, we would see her rarely but continued to enjoy every encounter very much. What a loss for all of us but especially you. We extend our sympathies and will always remember Susan with great fondness.

As we now live in Victoria, we will, unfortunately, miss the remembrance service. We will however be thinking of you.

    Alan and Jean Hollingworth

Drew, Sam and Monty (and your families),

I am truly sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. Your mom remembered little details- even reminded me of things when we crossed paths at the Glencoe every now and then. Your mom was obviously someone who always listened – never missed a beat.
My thoughts are with you and I wish you strength to find joy in the memories that you will forever have of your mom.

As a new Trainer she showed me respect, kindness and put me at ease. I know that the world was better because she was part of it.

  22. Susan was simply one of a kind. I’m so sorry to hear about her passing. I think like many of us, I had come to expect she would always pull through. I had privilege of learning about legal research from her at both the University of Calgary and at TransCanada. Her boundless energy and passion for what she did was infectious. 24. Lorraine Bayda :

Susan’s Family; Even though we have not met I have to tell you I am so sorry to hear of Susan’s passing. The last time I spoke to Susan we both had horrific news to share, Susan – her cancer and on my part the loss of my daughter. We were going to get together as soon as Susan felt better, that did not happen. Susan and I met at the Talisman Centre, we were in the Living Well Program for at least two years. Oh we did have some fun together and she referred to me as “her friend Lorraine” which now I can say was very dear to me. She was a special lady and knowing her was a gift! My thoughts are with you.
