January 15, 1923 – June 30, 2014

Benjamin Rosenbaum, beloved husband of Mona Rosenbaum, of Calgary, passed away on June 30, 2014 at the age of 91. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his son Eric Rosenbaum, daughter-in-law Chandra Ingram, granddaughter Garielle Rosenbaum, sister Faigel Pearlman brother-in-law and sister-in-law Philip Shapiro and Evelyn Sheftel-Shapiro and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son Gary Rosenbaum and his sister Sari Switzer.

Benjamin (Benny) Rosenbaum was born in Ratna, Poland. He immigrated to Canada when he was four years old with his mother and two sisters. They joined his father and other relatives who already immigrated. Benny grew up in Calgary where he attended Crescent Heights High School. He left school to work at Smithbilt Hats before joining the Royal Canadian Airforce in 1942. He was stationed in Jericho Beach in Vancouver, B.C. In 1952 he met and married the love of his life Mona. In January 2014 they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

When Benny completed his military duty in 1945, he moved to Peace River where he helped his father open a general store. He returned to his hometown of Calgary to help out in the family dry cleaning business—Star Cleaners. After the dry cleaner was closed in the late 1970s to make way for the new municipal building, Benny worked as an office manager at Calgary Metal. During his long retirement he enjoyed travelling, golfing, spending time with family and getting to know his granddaughter. Benny was also active in the Jewish Community as an avid supporter of B’nai Brith, the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, the Calgary Jewish Veterans Association and Jewish Family Services Calgary.

Funeral Services will be held at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue –1325 Glenmore Trail S.W.–on Thursday July 3, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.. Interment to follow at Beth Tzedec Memorial Park, 122 Shalom Way S.W. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made directly to Gary Rosenbaum Memorial Children’s Assistance Fund at the Jewish Family Service Calgary or a charity of your choice.
