ROOP – Michael Ross

June 8, 1927 – December 17, 2010

Michael passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 17, 2010 after a brief illness.

Michael was predeceased by his loving wife Muriel in 2002, and was cherished father to Debbie Hunt (Brian), Jo-Ann Horan (Larry) and Susan Grimshaw, (Grant), and brother to JoAnn Foster (Dutch Franks). Michael took great pleasure in the lives and accomplishments of his grandchildren, Sean, Trevor, and Brett Hunt, and Jennifer, Philip, and Kevin Horan, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Michael was born in Hanna, AB. After graduating from UBC he returned to Calgary to raise his family and pursue his remarkable career as a geologist in the oil and gas industry. He had a great love of the outdoors, hunting, skiing, and a lifelong passion for fly-fishing. His last cast was in November, 2010. Michael will be best remembered for his simple approach to life; his loyalty, generosity and love of family.

A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Flowers gratefully declined.

Condolence Messages

  1. Peter Stevenson :

I would like to offer my condolences to you at this difficult time. Your dad and grandfather was a down to earth and low key person who did not trumpet his considerable accomplishments. He with your mother successfully raised three balanced daughters who can carry on your family legacy.

  2. Pamela & Stevie (Belfast) :

We would like to record our deep sadness at the passing of Michael Roop. A great husband, father grandfather and uncle. Michael was such a welcoming and generous man to us both in Canada and on his visits to Ireland. We were blessed to be able to spend some time with him in September and it was obvious that his splendid sense of humour was still there. I hope all the family take great pride in a life well lived.

  3. My sympathies to all of Mike’s family at this time of sorrow. I know my Dad (Bob Schwartz) really enjoyed his times fishing with Mike all over Alberta and B.C. I’m so glad Mike was able to enjoy fishing right up until the end.

  5. Don Pike, Trout Unlimited Canada :

Mike was one of Trout Unlimited Canada’s earliest supporters in Calgary. His personal commitment to the cause of trout and fresh water conservation brought many of his friends and associates into the fold as well. A true friend of the trout, he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

  6. So many years have passed since Mike and I were “young” and full of adventure! I remember our fly fishing trips to New Zealand and Labrador as well as pheasant hunts to Brooks as though they were yesterday. He taught me the finer points of fly fishing particularly while I was trying to maintain an upright position in his canoe. I regret that over the years we failed to maintain contact but I feel his loss deeply.
My condolences to all. I will remember him!!!

  9. BRIAN and SYLVIA LANGTON :

Mike will be sorely missed by his family, not least by daughters Debbie, Jo-Ann, and Susan, and friends. We had the pleasure of knowing Mike both professionally, and as a neighbour for a short period of time in the seventies. He was always generous and welcoming.

  12. Lorraine Sinclair :

    To Michael’s daughters & family,
My condolences on the death of your father / grandfather. I was sad to learn of his death from Georgie Chapman. I especially recall his generosity when the ET’s of Calgary hosted a national convention here in 1985 and his hospitality (& Muriel’s) when my late husband and myself visited them in their Island paradise. My apologies for not attending his funeral but I am trying to catch a plane.

Lorraine Sinclair (an ET friend of your Mother’s)

  15. Jessica Liggett :

To all of the Roop family, I am saddened to hear of the passing of Uncle Michael, but it is comforting to know he was at home, where he wanted to be.

I remember him teaching my sister and I to catch minnows with a string tied to a bottle with a few bits of bread in it in the river behind the house. Not nearly as big of fish as he was used to catching, but for us it was marvelous!

A great man who I have many fond memories of.

    My condolences to you all.
    Thinking of you.
