ROMBOUGH, Bartlett Bidwell “Bart”

December 6, 1924 – Winnipeg, MB
December 24, 2013 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bart Rombough at the age of 89 on December 24, 2013.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary, their two sons, Bruce and Robert, daughter-in-law Stephanie and two grandchildren, Hayden and Alexandra; as well as his sister-in-law Shirley. Bart was predeceased by his mother and father, Muriel and Earl, and his two twin brothers, Douglas and Donald.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Bart joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. Immediately after the war, he attended the University of Manitoba and graduated as a Chartered Accountant. His earliest work led him to Toronto where he met and married Mary in 1954. Shortly after, they moved to Calgary where he started his life-long career in the oil and gas industry at Home Oil. He later joined PanCanadian Petroleum Limited where he was appointed Executive Vice President in 1976, President in 1980 and became Chief Executive Officer in 1982. Well respected amongst his peers, he retired at the age of 67 as Chairman and CEO in 1991. Bart served as a Director on several boards including Fording Coal Limited, Panarctic Oils, PanCanadian, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and Mount Royal College. He also served as a Chairman for the Canadian Petroleum Association.

Bart was known for his great sense of humor, his love of golf and fishing and for his distinguished career in the petroleum industry in Calgary. He took great pride in taking care of his family who will always remember him for his numerous stories, wise advice and a good laugh. He spent many winters in Maui and Scottsdale as resident snowbirds enjoying the warm weather and year round golfing. He was truly a wonderful husband, ideal father, fantastic grandfather and good friend to many and will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  4. Rombough Family:

I had the privilege to work with Bart during his entire career at PanCanadian. You have done an excellent job of capturing the essence of the man as I knew him. I will add that he had the natural leader quality of being able to quickly identify the strengths of individuals, to bring out the best in terms of their contributions to the success of the company and their own careers. He brought compassion to the workplace.

May cherished family memories sustain you during this difficult time,

    Joe Doolan

  6. Mary, sincere condolences to you & the rest of the Rombough family. Bart was a wonderful guy both as a client & as a friend.
Back in the 70s & 80s I was doing a lot of legal work for a number of companies in the Calgary oilpatch but it was always a special occasion to work with Bart & share his strong beliefs, clever insights & intellectual abilities as he brought them to bear on the problem at hand. He was a gifted executive who was respected throughout the industry.
He was much admired & will be fondly remembered.
