January 1, 1921 – December 2, 2011

With sadness we announce the sudden passing of Steve Romanchuk one month before his 91st birthday, following complications from a stroke.

Steve spent his early and later years in Calgary, but his life journey took him to Ottawa and Fort Saskatchewan, as well as assignments in the Philippines, Australia, South Africa and the USA. His service with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII provided a lifetime of discipline, friendship, stories, and loyalty to the Royal Canadian Legion. After the war he completed his engineering degree at the U of A and ultimately settled into a challenging and rewarding career with Sherritt Gordon Mines. His career allowed him to see the world, patent his inventions, and establish a global community of lifetime friends. Steve was fiercely independent; a kind and philanthropic gentleman who enjoyed good health in his own home until the end. Many of his happiest times were spent wintering in El Centro and at the summer cottage on Gull Lake. He believed in the mantra “if you are going to do something, do it well” and this is how he lived his life and raised his family.

Steve’s legacy continues through his children and grandchildren Gary (Darlene) Romanchuk and children Kyla, Chad and Janelle; Betty Anne (Marv) Goodwin and children Devon (Mike Corbett) and Brad; and Joan (Stephen) Douglas and children Kevin and Todd – and of course his great-grandson Matthew Corbett. Steve’s kind ways will be missed by sister Annie MacDonald; sisters-in-law, Helen Romanchuk and Betty Fenwick; and many relatives and friends of all ages. He was predeceased by his wife of forty-one years Pauline; as well as parents Alexandria and Paulo; and brothers, John Romanchuk and Bill Randall.

We will celebrate the privilege of having known Steve at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, or to a charity of your choice.

  11. Susan (Routly) Muirhead :

Hi Gary, Betty Anne & Joan,

Our thoughts are with you and your families as you grieve the loss of your Dad. Thinking of him brings up so many good memories from our childhood and times your Mom and Dad spent with my parents. Losing a parent is one of those foundational life events as you know. But may he now be rejoined with your Mom and all the Ft. Sask. group who have gone before him and they’re having Party Central.

We have been living in Nanaimo for the past 4 years but I always take a drive by the old neighbourhood whenever I come back to visit family and friends.

    With sincere condolences,

    Susan & Stan
