ROLSETH, Colin Stewart

July 16, 1948
September 8, 2013

We hang our heads, hats in hand, as we say goodbye to our proud “Cowboy” Colin Stewart Rolseth.

Colin was born July 1948 in Camrose, Alberta. In high school, he met the love of his life, Nancy. After they were married, Colin built his family and career in Calgary, as a partner at BDR Engineering where he earned the respect and trust of any and all that worked with him. Colin’s happiest times were when he was surrounded by family, friends, his dogs, and the horses while watching the sun set on Carma Sky Ranch; the dream home that was built into reality in 2000.
On Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the age of 65 years, Colin left behind his wife of 44 years, Nancy and their four children; Scott (Gail), Carla (Trent), Mark (Stephanie) and Kyle (Ceara). Colin has been blessed with 8 grandchildren: Erling, Olin, Noah, Carson, Jonas, Gunnar, Connor, Raya, and a 9th grandchild “on the way”. Colin also leaves behind his dear mother Jean, his sister Lynda (Gary), and two nephews Todd (Tracey) and Danny (Tara). Colin was predeceased by his father, Paul in 2012.

A Celebration of Colin’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, September 16, 2013 at 2 p.m. Western wear is welcome, as that is how Colin would have liked it. Tributes may be made to the Foothills Country Hospice Society,www.countryhospice.org or to Tom Baker Cancer Centre. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Colin Rolseth, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY Funeral homes.

  28. David and Verena :

Nancy, I was so sorry that I could not be at the funeral but I did want to share some of my remembrances of Colin with you. One of the benefits of seeing him over the last few years is that we were able to help one another to recall various incidents from our earlier years.

Auntie Jean, Colin and Linda lived with us (Mom, Dad, Dianne and me) on our farm in Balzac for about 2 years. Colin’s approximate age was 7-9 years and I was two years older. These were very formative years. Uncle Paul was working on the Dew Line in northern Canada and my Dad was farming.

We each had a pony. His was Naomi (I think) and mine was Fancy. We rode them summer and winter. We always rode bareback and sometimes we fell off.

We often slept outside on warm summer nights. One night I recall, we slept on top of the chicken coop. Our Moms were not thrilled because of concern we might fall (roll) off in our sleep so they kept coming out and finally dragged us inside.

We also wrestled all the time and I have to admit, it drove our parents nuts. But we had fun and I don’t recall anyone really getting hurt (too badly).

I remember Uncle Paul brought some mukluks for us from up north when he came home on vacation from the DEW line. They were fabulous, warm even in the snow and wonderful to run in. So Colin and I ran everywhere in our special, and colourfully beaded Eskimo winter shoes – the best snow shoes ever.

Grandpa Charlie (Mom’s and Auntie Jean’s father) lived on an acreage about ½ mile away where he kept his Clydesdales. He loved to teach us how to handle the horses, to shoe them, show them and even about raising foals. Colin and I would help Grandpa show them, often in Camrose where he farmed or in Calgary. One time we also took our ponies to Camrose – fun but I don’t think we won any prizes. Grandpa and his Clydes affected both of us; Colin with his Clydes on his acreage recently. In the early 1980’s, I was in a Clydes “partnership” with Grandpa when he was over 90 and couldn’t take care of them on his own anymore. The horses came to our acreage, first for winters only and then all the time.

While young and on the farm, Colin and I had a bet that whoever was married first had to pay the other $5. I was first but I took about 40 years to pay him, and of course by then, the price had gone up to $20.

Unfortunately, work and family plus distance meant we didn’t see one another too often for many years – it was mainly weddings that brought us together.

The last 3+ years though were very special to me and I think to him. We made a concerted effort to get together regularly, to remember the old times, to talk about family – parents and kids – or about horses. But mainly just enjoying one another’s company, some food, wine and the occasional scotch. I think it was during this time that we realized how very close we were. In the last few years I often referred to Colin as the brother I never had because he was so much like a brother, a very close brother. Being a man of few words, he often didn’t tell everyone what he was thinking but I believe that because of our closeness and my medical background, in the last few years he occasionally told me things he wouldn’t necessarily say to others. We were close – a very strong brotherly love. It was so wonderful to be together again. Being able to be there at the end was so important to me.

I hope these memories tell you a little about him before you two met. I certainly know why he was so loveable.

It meant a lot for Verena and me to renew our relationship and close feelings with you both and with your children. We will definitely keep in touch.

With all our love, Dave and Verena

  29. To Nancy and family: I was surprised to see the obituary and hope that Colin did not suffer long. I attended Sait with him about 1970, and remember him as a very pleasant and serious student. I pray that your family memories will bring you comfort in the coming days.
