It is with great sadness that her children announce the passing of Maria Robinson, “Ria” (nee Van der Aa) on Tuesday August 7, 2012 in Calgary, Alberta after a short illness.
She will be sorely missed by Fred, Audrey, Bill (Lynda) and Jimmy and her ten grandchildren, Bryan, Tyler, Kim, Michael, Daniel, Brad, Kerri, Lauren, Jordan, and Emily and her great grandchildren Charlie and Mason, of whom she was so proud. She was predeceased by her husband James in 1978. Ria had a challenging life having emigrated as a war bride from the Netherlands to arrive in a strange country whose language she did not speak and whose customs she did not entirely grasp. But she had a zest for life and made friends easily. She was the ultimate mama bear who would do anything for her family. She loved to laugh, she loved to cook and entertain and was never happier than with a glass of white wine in her hands stealing nickels from her children, grandchildren or neighbours in sometimes cut-throat games of cribbage, bridge or Dutch euchre. She leaves a legacy of warmth, compassion, courage and enduring fortitude as well as many dear friends from the Peterborough, Calgary and Palm Springs areas. We would like to thank the staff in Unit 74 at the Rockyview Hospital who made her final days as comfortable as possible. We especially want to thank Dr. Charles Henegan and Toni who treated her with compassion and kindness in her final years.
There will be a Private Gathering of family and friends to celebrate Ria’s life at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to a charity of the donor’s choice.
