RITCHIE, David E. A.

May 20, 1929 – Calgary, Alberta
February 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It‘s with many tears that we announce the passing of David E. A. Ritchie, beloved husband of Irene (Jensen) and much loved father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.

Dave was born in Calgary to David B. and Annie Ritchie on May 20, 1929. He attended school at Tuxedo Park, Balmoral, Crescent Heights and the University of Alberta. He obtained a B.Sc. in Pharmacy and dispensed for a few years before joining the Bureau of Dangerous Drugs where he worked as a Federal Government Inspector for twenty-seven years.

He is survived by six sons: Bruce, Bob (Sandy), Bill (Joan), Bernie (Shelley), Bert (Sheri), and Brian (Tracy); nine Grandchildren: Douglas, Lynnsey (Chris), Curtis, Steven (Allison), Megan, Madison, Katelyn, Jessica, and Shelby; and four Great Grandchildren: Jeremy, Jordyn, Griffin and Jacob. Dave is also survived by seventeen nieces and nephews; a brother and sister-in-law: Richard (Irene); special friends: Christine and Jake; and many other friends and acquaintances from Calgary where Dave spent most of his life.

Dave enjoyed working at the family acreages, doing crosswords and jogging. He always looked to find the humor in life’s activities and relished in being a wise-cracker. Dave took particular delight in instigating banter between his sons and was always eager to join in the ribbing. These memories are perhaps the sons’ most cherished, and reminiscing about their father’s behavior is certain to generate a chuckle.

Aside from family and friends, Dave left his mark in many other ways. Dave single-handedly wore a 2 km running trail around Canmore Park. He also transplanted hundreds of trees and managed three recreational properties, always by hand.

He was predeceased by his parents and stepmother, Jean; three siblings: Archie (Margaret), Helen, Anne (Hugh); a nephew, David J., and his wife, Colleen; and a niece’s husband, Roland Ulanicki.

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Flowers are graciously declined. Donations can be made in Dave’s memory to a charity of your choice.

In living memory of David Ritchie, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  5. Dear Ritchie family,
Mr. Ritchie was a fixture in our neighbourhood; running Centennial Park before the sport was in vogue. (His daily routine produced a well-cut perimeter path we knew as his.)
My own ‘path’ has had the pleasure of intermittent intersections with most of you, at various times, over the years.
I offer my sincere condolences to you all.

My thoughts are with you, Irene, and with the Richie Family as you prepare to say your goodbyes to a true gentleman. I know how much Dave’s lifelong friendship meant to my Dad, and our family was so grateful Dave and yourself were able to say goodbye to Dad last June. I hope you find comfort in your wonderful memories of Dave.
