REYNOLDS, Joan Isobel (nee Service)

January 12, 1933 – May 19, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a dear mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and friend. Joan Isobel Reynolds (nee Service) passed away Saturday, May 19th at the age of 79.

Born in Cobourg, ON, Joan taught herself to swim in the frigid waters of Lake Ontario, and created cherished memories with big sister, Marg. She met her husband to be, Ed, at a military dance. Once married, they moved to Germany where Ed was stationed with the Canadian Armed Forces. Following the birth of their first son Ty, they returned to Canada where Avril and Tim were born. Joan and Ed built a successful accounting practice in Calgary. Those who know Joan well, know that she loved singing (and yes, we loved listening to you!), blue jays, maple leaves during Ontario’s stunning Autumns, gardening, and especially her grandchildren.

Joan is survived by her sister Marg (Charlie); children Ty, Avril and Tim (Jennifer); grandchildren Matt, Drew and Brad; and countless extended family and friends. Joan was predeceased by her husband Ed; her parents Roy and Gertrude Service; granddaughter Sara Calvert; and son-in-law Peter Calvert.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Giles Presbyterian Church (1102 – 23rd Avenue N.W.) on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calgary Poppy Fund at or by calling 403-265-6304. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Joan Reynolds, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.

  1. Jennifer Reynolds :

Wow, Mrs. R …. You left us far too soon. We will miss your incredible sense of humor and sarcasm, your laugh, going to Stampede Parades together and stopping traffic on 9th Avenue, hearing about your successes at the casino’s nickle slots, hearing your giggles with Orpha after you both slipped on the sidewalk, the way you always had something sitting on the tv stand for the boys when we came by, pumping them full of Grandma’s special chocolate milk, your love of blue jays and maple leaves, how your closet had more clothes with the price tags on them than those without, 8 pairs of your favorite shoes, trips made to the Mustard Seed to donate the many beautifully knit toques, elevator rides at the ‘resort’ with the boys…I could do this for days. Thank you for being my surrogate Mom, my friend, my confidante, my husband’s hero. Loving you always and forever. Say hi to the big man for me. Much love, Jennifer (the OTHER, less impactful Mrs. R.

Thinking of you all during this difficult time. Aunt Joan was a truly special woman and we always loved to see her when she came to visit our Grandma (Marg). On a personal note, I will always treasure my memories of visiting Aunt Joan and Uncle Ed in 1988 and our trips to the Stampede, and Banff. I remember Aunt Joan giggling hysterically when I was literally green on a ride at the Stampede. She was certainly fun to be around. With our deepest sympathy, Love, David, Jill, Katrina, Charline and Alan Ivatt

At this time I am thinking of Joan–who has been a close friend of mine for over 30 years, and I can’t believe you went ahead of me. Although, you were always a step ahead of me through out our life of friendship. I will always remember you for your great sense of humor, and the great talks we had together–about life in general–how we shared stories–and how you always said-you thought I should write a book –to give others a laugh or two. I miss you now and will think of you often in the years or months ahead. I send my heartfelt condolence and sympathy to Ty,Avril,Tim and Jennifer and family on the loss of a marvelous person.

Oh Joan, where do I start…? I think best fitting is this quote…
“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same.”

That is truly how I feel about Joan and Ed and forever will. The year was 2000 and I had the privilege to get to know Joan and Ed by a chance of of paths crossing…they were beginning a new chapter of their lives at a new address to leave the yard work and house stresses behind and have more time to enjoy life. (LIFE, something Joan was full of!) I had the pleasure of getting to know them while I learned my new role as the activities coordinator at “the resort”. 🙂 Joan was always game to be a part of the events, outings and action. Always ready to lend a hand and always ready to have some laughs. There are just so many qualities I loved about Joan; her amazing sense of humour, how black and white certain things were for her (like carrots, forget about it, no way),a lady who was kind, clever and generous and always humble, the deep, deep Love and Pride she had for her family.
There are some things that will remind me of Joan as long as I live; a good ceaser, yellow begonia’s, maple leaves, It’s a long way to Tipperary (sung slightly off key), Murray River PEI, and Remembrance Day. The world will be a little darker and quieter now without your bright light and beautiful spirit Joan, I am better for knowing you and will never forget you. love Emma

To the family of Joan, I just found out today of the sudden passing of Joan. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to all of Joan’s family. I had the pleasure of meeting Joan and Ed at the Manor Village in 2005, when I started there as the AC. Not going to lie at first I was a little afraid of Joan, she was very black and white. But I grew very fond of Joan and looked forward to our “lunch outings” after I left the Manors. I have many great memories of Joan and how wonderful of a person she was. She will be truly missed.
