RENDEN, Hugo Raymond

March 13, 1921 – Bismarck, North Dakota
July 11, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Hugo Renden, beloved husband of Dominga Marie , passed away peacefully with all his family at his bedside on Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Peter Lougheed Hospital after a short illness.

Besides his beloved wife of 67 years, Hugo leaves behind his sons Warren and Stephen (Lorraine), his daughter Sheila Greenberg, son-in-law Michael Greenberg and granddaughter Rochelle Greenberg. He was predeceased by his father Walter Renden, mother Louise Renden and brother Walter Renden Jr.

Hugo enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life. He graduated from St. Thomas College in Minnesota and spent most of his working years in the oil industry in Alberta, first with Texaco and Hamilton Brothers, then with Kerr-McGee. Upon retirement Hugo has enjoyed the company of family and friends, the accomplishments of his granddaughter Rochelle, his many pets, Dixieland jazz and his prized and beloved cactus garden. Hugo was fortunate to have been able to live life on his terms and in his later years he especially enjoyed a beer in his yard after a hard day working in his garden. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.

  2. Renee Lalonde :

Dearest Marie and Sheila, It’s with a sad and heavy heart that I write this having just heard the news. My deepest condolences to you and the rest of the family. As we all know, Hugo was a special person but he meant something very special to me. Taking me under his wing, being a strong source of love and support, being every bit a father figure for me, made me a better person and I loved him. Your family took me in when I had nowhere to go and it was Hugo that kept me smiling and optimistic through the challenging times. I will miss him next time I come home.
    all my love, Renee

    Marie, Warren, Stephen and Sheila,

I am saddened to hear of your Husband’s/Dad’s passing. A long-time member of the 15th Street Community has moved on to the next stage. I remember Hugo well as a child; and when I started work downtown he would often walk to the bus stop on 36th Avenue and 12th Street where I also caught the bus and we would visit on the ride downtown. I had not seen him for quite a while now, but it sounds like he enjoyed life to the fullest.

    Please accept my condolences.

    Donnie Watkins

  6. My condolences to the family of Hugo Renden.
Hugo was a supervisor at Texaco during my early career there in the 1950s and 1960s. I had great respect for him as a geophysicist. He was the superior employee of those who came up from the United States.
I will miss him at our Elderstar Club (Texaco Calgary retirees) luncheons.

  7. Harris Kroon :

Dear family, I am saddened at the passing of my friend Hugo. We were both employed at Texaco where I got to know him well. I curled on the same rink as Hugo, and we shared the same humour, such as the television series (some time ago) “Laugh In” and the rather strange comic book “Mad Magazine”. Harry Rimmer and I used to enjoy his company while relishing a beer (or two) after work in the Wales Hotel, years ago. Hugo was a fine gentleman and it was my privilege to count him as my friend. My condolences to all of you. Rest well, Hugo. Harris Kroon

  9. Neil Tidsbury and Ron and Laurel Patterson :

Dear Minga, Warren, Steve, Sheila, Michael, and Rochelle,
We will fondly remember Hugo as a kind and loving man. Our families first met in 1952 when Neil began work with Texaco. Neil remembers Hugo as a kind, considerate, and knowledgeable man. One who was always willing to help the newcomers to the Texaco workplace.
Hugo was always interested in the lives of his children’s friends. A visit with him and Minga was an enjoyable experience generally filled with humor and laughter. He had a way of making each of us feel cared for and special in our own right. He was also a strong man with the courage to live life on his own terms.
You are all in our hearts and in our prayers.
    With love and deep respect,
Neil Tidsbury, Laurel and Ron Patterson.

  10. Mary Sullivan :

Gustav A. Renden was your grandfather. Anfind Anfindsen Renden your great grandfather. Ruth Renden’s son, Joseph Sullivan, my father, was Walter’s cousin. Rest in peace my first cousin once removed. Family can contact me if they are interested in Renden family photos from the late 1800 and early 1900’s up to the late 1940’s. I have family movies, too…. that may include Walter when he was a child – perhaps you will recognize him? I do recognize his father in photos and film. I am sorry for your family’s loss – and I hope that someone sees this…again, rest in peace, Walter Renden.
