REED – John Carl

John Carl Reed.  August 22, 1972 – September 15, 2009. Resident of Calgary, beloved husband to Joyce Kalathil, father to Satya Reed, son of Alvin and Lela Reed, brother of Troy Reed-Walters, Shantal Dengate, and James & Christopher Reed, son-in-law of Kurian (Ken) Kalathil and Mercy Samson.  Born in Mississauga, Ontario, John passed away after a brief battle with gastric cancer. John is survived by numerous family and friends.

John was a kind, caring and intelligent child who grew up to be a compassionate, peaceful, loving and grounded man. After high school, John joined the Naval reserves where his natural self-discipline and pursuit of excellence led to an invitation to an elite diving team. John chose to pursue his lifelong passion for health and entered the Darcy Lane Massage Therapy School in London, Ontario. During his last year there John was diagnosed with lymphoma. In spite of this, John completed the program and was successful in his first battle with cancer.

John headed west to Calgary where he met his beautiful wife Joyce in 1999.  John and Joyce married on May 5th, 2004 and were joined by their beautiful daughter, Satya, on November 5th, 2007. John was committed to physical and spiritual well being, and helped create and develop Embody Wellness Centre in 1999 and Fruition Therapeutics in 2003.  He also kept busy as a condo developer since 2004.  John was a dedicated athlete who loved sports and became quickly adept at whatever he tried. He especially enjoyed running, but his other great joy was hockey.  In 2007, John started the Red Lions hockey team and was a driving force behind their 2009 city championship.

John Carl Reed was a man who through his life beat many odds, and overcame the many considerable challenges that were thrown his way. John did it with his customary grace, thoughtfulness and dedication-all the while, believing that his greatness would not merely be measured by his successes but also by the way he encouraged and enabled those around him to succeed.

John’s family and his many friends will greatly miss him.  We will always remember the miracle that he was and the miracles he inspired. Love and light, John – we love you with all our hearts.

  8. Jennifer Auld-Roach :

Although I did not know John personally, I always enjoyed coming to see him at work. I followed him as a client from Embody to Fruition and was happy to see his and Joyce’s dreams come true both personally through their marriage and Satya and professionally through Fruition. His gentle sprit touched many lives and he will be missed. I appreciate the opportunity to have known him.

My deepest sympathies for his family and friends,
    Sincerely,
    Jennifer Auld-Roach

  9. John was my massage therapist when I was in Calgary from 1998 – 2000. I recommended him to all of my friends because I found him to be a very compassionate, kind man. I moved away from Calgary for 6 years and when I came back I tried to look him up but I couldn’t remember his last name. When I saw his picture in the paper today I was stunned. My warmest thoughts are with his family at this time.

  11. Dear Joyce,

There will always be a vacuum in our hearts that we never really got to see John in person except in Supriya’s wedding pictures. But the things that we have heard about him blesses our heart. I am really impressed to know that he loved to encourage and enabled those around him to succeed.

    Some body truly said,
“There is only one life to live
    Which will soon pass away.
But what you do for Christ
    will only last.”

The grief of the loss of your husband is too much to bear but the Bible says Rejoice for one day you shall see him.

We all grieve with you and pray that the Lord of all comforts will comfort you, give you the grace to live each day from strength to strength and glory to glory.

With all our love and prayers

James, Lovie and Josiah and the entire SAMSON family.

  15. Dear Joyce,

I worked with John many years ago, and was kept informed to his life’s joys – his marriage to you, the birth of your precious daughter – by a mutual friend. I was heart broken when I heard of his diagnosis and again, when I learned of his passing. My prayers and thoughts have been with you, daily, and they will continue to be.

May you be gently blanketed in comfort and peace.

John was my sister’s pre-natal massage therapist and my massage therapist. We were both always so impressed at how much he remembered about us. He always asked about my sister when I was there for an appt. He was such a sweet man, little did I know the challenges in life he was dealing with. Congratulations to him for having such a loving family, he deserves it. All the support to his entire family. I am saddened by your loss.

  21. To the Reed family,

My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. I had just sent John an email the night before he passed.

I played hockey with John, he was kind enough to have me join the Red lions hockey club. John was great in so many ways to all of us on the team. #44 had a passion to play the game and to learn the game. He was a great teamate which turned into a friendship.

You will be in my thoughts next time I take to the ice Reeder.

Joyce and family, my thoughts are with you and hope each day gets easier. I was a client at of John’s at Fruition. He always remembered to ask me about my run training and if the exercises he suggested were helping. I know this may sound small, but to me it was a big deal. You could tell he really cared about his clients and helping us achieve our goals. Take care, Trish

  23. Joyce and Family,

Belated condolences, my apologies. I was stunned and saddened to recently hear of John’s passing last September. I was an occasional patient of John’s from Dr Shaw in 1999 through to Embody and Fruition. I really enjoyed his positive attitude and felt stronger both physically and mentally after a massage and discussion with John.
My prayers and thoughts are with you and the family.
