REDMOND, John Joseph

September 12, 1928 – Montreal, QC
April 22, 2014 – Calgary, AB

John Redmond, husband, father, family man, carpenter, outdoorsman, friend to many, amateur historian and philosopher, fervent Irishman and francophone at-heart passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the age of 85 years.

He had more than a half-century love affair with his wife Margaret Treacy whom he met in Montreal in 1958. Beyond his love for Margaret was a strong commitment and generous dedication to his entire family. His toolbox or kindness were never far when someone needed help. Eileen, his beloved sister and favourite aunt to all, will proudly carry-on the Redmond name.

John’s spirit lives on through his two daughters Linda and Treacy (Josée); his sons John (Lori) and Brian (Nathalie); his grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Tim, Chloé and Sébastien; and the many nieces, nephews, and other relatives that he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his parents James and Ellen (McGuirk) Redmond from Ireland; his brother James (Patricia); and his sister Dorothy (James Dempsey).

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to The Bethany Care Foundation, 1001 – 17 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 2E5, where John spent the later years of his life in the loving care of his extended Bethany family.

In living memory of John Redmond, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

Without knowing it Uncle Johnny taught me a lot about family and love.
I wish I could be there. I’ll indeed be raising a pint this day.

  2. My condolences to you and your family! I was blessed to have worked with him for a whole summer back in 1983. He was a great supervisor and I will always appreciate that opportunity. Great conversations we had to and from Lachine. Rest in peace Mr. Redmond.

  3. Louis Girard & Richard Dubois :

  6. Karen (Johns) Hiebert :

Our family has so many wonderful memories of John. He will always have a special part in my heart for his wonderful, quirky sense of humour; his ability to fix just about everything and his deep love for his family. John was always so kind and thoughtful to my sons and I, and was a welcome part of our lives for many years.
Much love to all as you let John go, knowing his spirit will always be with you.
    Love
Karen Hiebert, Matthew and Marc Johns

  13. Dear Linda, Treacy, John, Brian, and Margaret, I wept when I read the obiturary because it was so very true and really captured your Dad (and husband). He was a most generous man with a heart that had the capacity to continually expand to embrace all that he met, including myself. I had the real pleasure of getting to know him and can think of only rare times when I would visit and not find him with his toolbox or sitting in the kitchen helping whomever was over. He was a wonderful man and I know that you all will miss him dearly. You are in my prayers and I hope that you are comforted by the fact that he was well loved throughout his days.
    Helene
