RAUCH, Joanne

January 1,1953 – Calgary, AB
May 15, 2013– Calgary, AB

“Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality” – Emily Dickenson

Our beloved Jo passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 surrounded by her circle of love; her devoted sisters, nieces and nephew. Her loving companion Ruby was at her side when Jo most needed her on Sunday evening when she suffered a cardiac event.

Jo was the youngest of the four Rauch sisters and she is mourned by Maureen, Janie and Francey. She was second mother to her nieces and nephews, Kelsey, Riley, Graydon and Cassidy and a doting great aunt of Cade, Heath and Reegan. Also grieving her loss are her brothers-in-law Rob Easson, David Little and Bob Ham. Jo was predeceased by her parents Jack and Helen Rauch.

Jo was 60 years old and through her life as a teacher, family advocate, dog lover, friend, neighbour, she comforted many, mentored many, humoured many more and was always ready to make the acquaintance of complete strangers of either the two legged or four legged variety. Her unwavering compass of compassion, advocacy, giving back, and an insatiable curiosity in all people and their life journeys gave her life its shape and meaning. She will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by family, friends, co-workers and neighbours alike.

Her spirit will be held in our hearts for eternity, we are so grateful for her presence in our lives.

A Celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 1:30p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire donations can be made directly to Calgary Humane Society in honour of Joanne and her love of animals.

In living memory of Joanne Rauch, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200

When I think of Joanne, the first word that comes to my mind is ‘spunky.’ She taught at James Fowler High school and made us laugh on a regular basis. She had a great outlook about our jobs as teachers.

  5. Janie Urbauer :

Dear Francey, Rob, Maureen, David, Janie and family,

I am so saddened at the loss of your dear Jo. So many memory’s — a wondrous spirit with a heart of gold, a sense of style and humour that allowed her to bring tears of laughter and love, especially when she was talking to my mother (Betty Nigro). She was the only person I know who with love and feigned distain could say whatever was on her mind, and get away with it, something I could never achieve. I can close my eyes and see her beautiful face, loving, compassionate, wonderfully dramatic and believe that her spirit will be forever present. Our thoughts, prayers and love are with you at this indescribably sad and difficult time.

    Love, Janie and Dan Urbauer

Dear Maureen, David and Rauch Family,

Words are so woefully insufficient to provide even a small measure of the depth of solace that your precious Jo’s sudden passing calls for. Just know that each tear that you shed is a tribute to the unbreakable bond of love that you have for Jo; each smile that crosses your face in remembrance of times past celebrates the exuberant and fun-loving way that Jo lived her life; and each moment of quiet reflection lets you feel Jo forever in your hearts, thoughts and family bond. We may not be able to be there to offer our condolences in person but please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  8. My Joey. The most selfless person I knew. You had such a positive impact on my life. You were there for me always when I needed you. You were always giving to others. Your sense of humour was definitely your own, but I apppreciated it so much. Your laugh could fill a room. Everyone loved your quirkiness, it is what made you so unique. The stories and memories will live on forever. You will never be forgotten and will be in my heart for eternity. I eventually will be at peace knowing that you are my angel watching over me. I love you.

  9. Jo, was like my second mother. She was so loving, caring and would do anything for anyone. Jo was a little different than most, but that was what was soooo amazing about her. She had her little quirks, that were hilarious and just out of this world. I could go on and on about Jo, but I won’t. I just want her to know, and I know she does, that I just love her sooo much!!!!!

Thank you for everything my wonderful friend and aunt!!
    Love your nephew!

  10. Dear Francey & Rob, Maur & David, Janie & family,
My heart goes out to all of you. Jo was a special person and an old friend. Full of style and class, she spoke her mind and often made me laugh. She was spirited and a seeker. We travelled through the many ups and downs of growing up, wanting to understand the meaning and mystery of life. We had wild adventures and wonderful talks.
Jo – may you fly like an eagle and may your soul rest on the wings of your parents, Jack & Helen. I love you and will miss you.
    Love, Nigro

I was so very sad to hear the news of Jo’s sudden passing. My heart goes out to all of you in this time of sorrow. I feel fortunate to have met Jo through Nance. I remember being struck by her sassy spirit and style, her laugh and playfulness and of course her love of dogs. Please accept my deepest sympathies. With love, Betty

  11. To the Rauch Family
My heartfelt sympathy at the loss of Jo – vital, passionate Jo. May grace and comfort surround and support you.
Story after story runs through my mind about Jo – they all make me laugh. To say that Jo was ‘quirky’ would be an understatement of her perspective of the world, and how she expressed herself. It was a delight everytime she called me “Fink”. To be counted as Jo’s friend was a blessing which I will always cherish and hold precious.

    Dear Francey, Maureen and Janie, and Families;

It is a wonderful blessing for anyone to be able to so fondly remember a loved one and with much appreciation because of the many ways that person gave love back was so very often unconditional. Also knowing in your hearts that you sincerely value all that Jo did and gave to you, while you had her near. Your heavy loss such as this is unmistakenly devastating and profound, but her true spirit and loving heart is, and will be lovingly remembered, and appreciated by each of you. Our deepest sympathy. I will always remember the few times shared with Jo on her visits to Unionville. Joanne, I did not know you as an adult – we were simply girls at school. It was because of your laughter, sense of fun, fashion style that made you outstanding – you were good and kind, and could see that quality in others. Many people pass through our lives and I am most thankful that I was able to know you in those early years. You are the youngest of your family, but too young to go.
    My condolences, Lesley

To Jane and Jo’s loving family
Although I only met Jo on her occasional visit To Toronto, I very quickly knew her to be a kind, loving, sweet person. Always ready to listen to your life story and offer kindly advice. I loved her wit and her laugh was infectious, often laughing at herself or her own jokes. The sorrow I feel for all of you is overwhelming. I hope in time you will find solace in the memories of good times with her.

  24. Dear Family,
Joanne and I taught together many years ago at Edmonton Academy! She was a seasoned teacher and I was new to the profession. I will always remember her kindness and support as I found my way in the teaching profession! I loved her passion and I fondly think of her laugh and candidness. She once held a garden party in her home and I brought my 18 month old son – he was in awe of her flowers and we snapped a picture – it is blown up and hangs in my family room – it reminds me of her.
Many thoughts and prayers to support you in this time.

  26. Brian Mullally :

Dear Francey, Maureen, JAnie and Families:

I was quite shocked when I heard about the passing of your sister Joanne! I taught with Joanne from 1983-88 at Edmonton Academy. It was my first job and Joanne was a seasoned veteran then with approximately 5 years of teaching experience under her belt. She was the “go to” person on staff for advice on not only teaching but fashion, home decore, and hockey (just kidding – I think she detested sports!) She had a unique perspective on the world and she would not hesitate to criticize that world and offer suggestions on how to make it better. She also had a wicked sense of humour and a great laugh that I enjoyed tremendously. She was a dedicated teacher, great friend and an awesome advocate for children. As someone previously mentioned, she will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered. My condolences to you and your families.

My dearest Jane and family, my heart felt love and compassion for what you are going through. I feel like I know all of you from the many conversations with Jane. I know Jane adored her sister JO who was her rock and flew here many times over the past 2 yrs to support Jane and the rest of the family through Graydons long ordeal and recovery from cancer. I am amazed at the courage of the whole family. I met Jo and agree she was a very unique person . I am grateful I had the chance to meet her. I know she is an angel watching over her loved ones.
