RACZ, Mary Julia (nee Lugofett)

January 1, 1946 – Carragana, SK
July 16, 2014 – Calgary, AB

In the company of her family and closest friends, Mary Racz left this life on Wednesday, July 16, 2014.

Mary is survived by her son, Sheldon (Heather); granddaughters, Lauren and Molly; and sisters, Ann (Frank) Roller and Eva (Ross) Shinski. Mary was predeceased by her husband George in 2005. Her extended family includes, her step-children, Gay (Monty) Gould, Bob (Diane) Racz, Lori Hargrove, Sherry (Gord) Robertson, and their children; sisters and brothers-in-law, Les and Val Racz, Helen Keeler, Liz and Bob Boyce, and Cathy and Mickey Lysohirka; as well as her many nieces and nephews.

Those who had the privilege to know Mary best will remember her passion for gardening, joy in cooking for a crowd, pleasure in good company, delight in her grandchildren, and appreciation for a nice red wine.

She had simple tastes, and the uncanny ability to empathise with others, laughing along with them, doing her best to help them, or sharing in their pain. She had a special bond with her sisters, and her generous, caring nature attracted lasting friendships spanning years, experiences, and workplaces. Her devotion to her closest friends and family was unwavering.

And, at the end of this last shift, we know George was there, patiently waiting to make up for lost time with a glass of vino and a rye.

A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Agapé Hospice, 1302 – 8 Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 Telephone: (403) 282-6588. With special thanks to Dr. Savoia, Dr. Falk, and the kind and caring staff at Agapé Hospice.

In living memory of Mary Racz, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  2. Auntie Mary,

You were sick and tired and we all knew,
that God would soon come to take you.
You fought so hard, so very long,
but through the pain, you stayed strong.

We all knew there would come a day,
when God would come to carry you away.
It doesn’t make it easier to say goodbye,
and I try so hard not to cry.

I can’t help but feel defeated,
or even maybe a little cheated.
But how very selfish would I be,
to hope and pray you could stay with me.

I love you and I will cherish my memories of you forever….

    Barb

We were so saddened to hear of the loss of your Mom/grandmother. We have such fond memories of her – volunteering at St. Mark/cheering you all at hockey games, but most of all her kindness and gentleness. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

  10. Brenda Cornelsen :

    Sheldon,

Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your wonderful Mother. My father, Nick Czibere, was your father’s cousin. Before he passed away, he spent a month in the General Hospital in 1996. Your Mom was working there at the time. She was a constant presence and comfort to both my Mom & Dad. She brought homemade soup & little treats for Dad, spent hours talking with Mom & did everything possible to help them during a heartbreaking time. That was Mary. She was loved & will be missed by many. My prayers are with you.

    Brenda

It’s been our privilege and honor to have not only been Marys neighbor but to have been her friend for years. The service was a beautiful tribute of her life, no onions were needed. Mary touched so many lives in so many ways, she might be gone but she certainly will not be forgotten.
