QUON, Bertha Annie (nee Hong-Louie)

April 30, 1936 – Bassano, Alberta
April 25, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Time for me to go now, I won’t say goodbye;
Look for me in rainbows, way up in the sky.
Music and lyrics: Conn Bernard (1990) Vicki Brown

Bertha passed peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2014 in Calgary just days before her 78th birthday.

She is survived by her brothers and sisters, James L. Hong (Arlene), Henry Hong, May Culham, Edward Hong-Louie, and Kathleen Wall (Ben); numerous cousins; and 46 nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Lance Junior (1959); parents, Louie (1969) and Nellie (1998) Hong; and siblings, William, Albert, and Davey Hong; and cousin, Chee Louie.

Bertha was born in Bassano, Alberta and always fondly remembered her Nanny Derky. Bertha grew up in Cluny, Alberta and in her lifetime trained as a nursing assistant, legal assistant and took pride in working at the Glencoe Club in Calgary for many years. She loved teaching English to friends, and would often leave goody baskets of food at the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

AB (Auntie Bert) was always the source of important news events and best restaurant destinations. She endured some health challenges in her last decade, but constantly maintained her charm and wit. AB never said goodbye – only see you later!

A Celebration of Bertha’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Bertha loved animals and helping the less fortunate. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in memory of Bertha to your local animal shelter or the Calgary Drop-In Centre, 1 Dermot Baldwin Way SE, Calgary, AB, T2G OP8.

In living memory of Bertha Quon, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Condolence Messages

  1. Lois Vicens :

    I knew Bert many (earlier years) as I did the whole family. I looked after Bert and Kat one weekend when May could not. Took them hand- in- hand downtown one Sunday. They probably wouldn’t remember. Passing the office building that weekend, the janitor came out and said, oh, are these your sisters? I remember Bert in the good times and we never know when we are young what problems we have to face. Blessings for Bert in her new Home.

  2. Bonnie Losier :

    Bert was a great friend to my mother, Janet Campbell, and I from our very first days in Cluny. She was also a like a second mom to me starting when I was 17 and had my first job at the hilltop cafe. She’d drive me to work everyday as my mom was away at summer school. The friendship continued throughout the years, and although we hadn’t visited this last year, she was a kind, generous, and loyal friend who will be missed. Rest in peace Bert, and know that you made a difference to our family.

  3. Leatrice Lam :

    My memories of Bert include being met at the CPR ‘whistle stop’ near Cluny, a hike through the tall prairie grass to the Louie Hong General Store, a walking tour of the town with running commentary on people and places; all with a knowing half smile and often a tongue-in-cheek comment. She was a great tour guide! See you later, Bert.
