  4. Murray Bryant :

Dear Jean and Family, I was saddened to see in the Globe and Mail the announcement of David’s passing. I was a very young colleague of David’s at UofT, starting in 1980. I recall the many dinners we had with Bill Waters and David when we taught night classes. He was a true colleague and friend, he was unstinting in his advice, I admired his intellect, his breadth of interests, but above all his real sense of humanity and what was important. Today I feel as you do a real sense of loss for a great scholar and friend. Murray Bryant

Judy and I were very surprised to hear of Dave’s passing on March 17. Dave was a great mentor, friend and colleague during my 27 years at the Unversity of Toronto. I am sorry that we have lost touch during the past 14 years since we moved to Victoria.
I have always stated that Dave was the smartest person I have ever had the opportunity to work with. He was a great inspiration to me as a young faculty member at the School of Business and I am so pleased that I had the chance to work on a couple of projects with him early in my career.
Best wishes to Jean and the familty. Dave will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

    Dear Mrs. Quirin

I just found out that David passed away recently. I received my doctorate from the UofT Business School in 1976. David was my thesis advisor.

I owe Dave a great debt of gratitude for seeing me through the often traumatic experience of obtaining a doctorate. He was instrumental in guiding me to do my best work. Importantly, he also told me when I was finished with my thesis, something I take to heart with my own students. Often students are the last to know when they have done enough. The major findings of my thesis were published in the American Economic Review, which is the premier academic journal in the field of economics. Thanks to David I have had a wonderful career and today I am a PhD coordinator in accounting with many doctoral students of my own. Much of what I learned from David, I pass on to my students.

I can offer you scant comfort for the loss of a husband of so many years. What I can say is that David had a lasting and very positive impact on me and I am sorry that he is gone.

  11. Hartley Janssen :

    To David’s family,

I last saw David at U of T in January 1967 when he reviewed my thesis towards an MBA at UBC. I also worked for him as a research assistant for the BC Royal Commission on Automobile Insurance. I often referred to his book on public finance and chose a career in that field (at the Bank of Canada), I suspect partly influenced by his passion for the subject. Whenever his name came up, I would remember him, and my time as a student, with fondness.
Please accept my condolences with your loss.

    Sincerely,
    Hartley Janssen

    Dear Mrs. Quirin,

    Please accept my deepest sympathy.

I met Mr. Quirin, 27 years ago. You opened your home to me, staying with you and Dave while visiting with Jim whom I met while attending Regina Mundi Collage in London.

As you know, Jim and I have remained best of friends, and regularly update each other on our families.

Jim always held his father and mother in highest regard, which to me is most important.

When Jim called to tell me that his father had passed, he was most crushed, but his concern was how his mother is.

I pray you will find peace in knowing that you both have raised a great family. I know the love and respect will be there for you in the years to come…

    Yours very truly,
    with love,
    mike
