September 11, 2014 – Port Hardy, BC
It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Laura Lynn Purdy (née Todd). Laura died on Thursday, September 11, 2014 in a scuba diving accident while vacationing with her family off of the coast of Vancouver Island, BC. She was 53 years old.
Born in Shaunavon, SK on April 14, 1961, Laura lived in various cities in Canada and the United States before attending the University of Calgary where she graduated with a B.Ed. and later a BA in English. She was a fine teacher, writer, editor and poet with a unique touch for observing and capturing beauty and sharing it in a precise and personal way. Laura dedicated herself to many causes and charities, devoting countless hours to Ten Thousand Villages and others.
Laura was generous of spirit, a giving friend who brightened our lives with her quick wit and warm humour. She loved literature and music, traveling, skiing, hiking, biking, exploring the outdoors, and sitting by the lake with her dog Jesse and puppy Lily in the company of good friends.
Laura was the beloved wife of Darrel Purdy for thirty-one years and the proud and devoted mother of sons, Michael and Aaron. She is also survived by her parents Murray and Elsie Todd; sister Carrie; brothers, Cameron (Colleen) and David (Vhalle); mother-in-law Hazel Purdy; sister-in-law Lynda; and brother-in-law Glen; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
We all loved her dearly, and will miss her smiles, hugs, and unending love and support.
