May 13, 1948 – Birmingham, England
January 17, 2014 – Edmonton, AB
Bob Provan beloved husband of Sylvia of Calgary, AB passed away seven weeks after a double lung transplant at the U of A Hospital in Edmonton, AB, on Friday, January 17, 2014 at the age of 65 years.
Bob was born in Birmingham England on May 13, 1948, returning to Lethbridge with his mother after his father James Provan died in November of 1948. His mother Elsie Provan and his aunts Edith Niven and Ruth Williams were important and influential people in Bob’s life until they passed away. Bob developed his love for the outdoors early in life from his uncle Bert Niven and cousin Dr. Jack Snedden and family in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Waterton.
Bob graduated from high school in Lethbridge in 1965. Bob then attended the U of A, graduating as a dentist in 1971, the youngest in his class. Bob practiced dentistry at 17th Ave S.E. Calgary for more than thirty-nine years. He had clients that had been with him his entire career. He also loved the second and third generation families.
Bob enjoyed many simple pleasures, mountain hiking, gardening (beautiful front annual flower beds every year until last spring compliments of Edith’s and Bert’s teachings), reading, playing old music on his juke box, running his vintage Lionel Train set, camping, golfing and playing board games. Bob married Sylvia in 1988 and she joined him in most of these activities. Golfing did not “take” for Sylvia. Camping was a bit of an adventure in that their tent blew away, never to be found again, on their first trip to Waterton. Hiking into mountain cabins solved this problem. Bob and Sylvia enjoyed jaunts to Las Vegas, trips to Mexico, annual driving trips into the U.S. and one trip to Denmark to meet Sylvia’s distant relatives. For thirty-five years Bob was an active member of the Alberta Armchair Hockey League. Bob and Sylvia both enjoyed the annual AAHL draft party.
Bob embraced Sylvia’s family and they loved him dearly.
Besides his loving wife Sylvia, Bob is survived by his cousin and spouse Dr. Jack and Carol Snedden and family. He was predeceased by Parents James and Elsie Provan.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
