POWLAN, William “Henry”

October 15, 1921 – July 4, 2012

William “Henry” Powlan beloved husband of Anne of Calgary, passed away peacefully after a valiant battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at the age of 90 years.

He resided in Calgary where he was a well-known herbalist and proud veteran of World War II. He was as unique as he was special and will be remembered as someone who appreciated and lived life to the fullest. He had a wide circle of friends, all who enjoyed his keen sense of humour, his endless storytelling and booming voice and laughter. We were fortunate enough to have known this kind, courageous and considerate man who was truly one of the really good guys. For all of this and much more, he will be forever etched in our memories and hearts.

Besides his loving wife Anne, Henry is survived by his children Gay (Rey), Jade, Tania (John), Troy (Lee); step-children, Sam, Helen and John; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister Evelyn (Berndt) of Calgary; and brothers Ronald (Charlene) and Dr. Roy (Heleane) of California. He was predeceased by father Frank, mother May; sisters May, Irene and Vi; brothers Robert and Frank; and daughter Jackie Roth.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Monday, July 9, 2012 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Henry’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff of Southwood Hospice for the loving care they showed Henry and his family.

  4. Ernie & Loretta Hayden :

    Anne,

    We used to live in Calgary in Oakridge and Mr. Powlan (Henry) treated me with herbs more than 10 years ago. We used always have a nice visit with both of you when we came for Mr. Powlan’s special herbs. You gave us your recipe for Swedish meatballs which we still make. We have often thought of you folks and our lives have been touched by knowing both of you. We presently live in Texas but when we heard of Mr. Powlan’s passing, it is with sadness that we acknowledge this news. Our thoughts are with you and hope you find warmth in knowing both of you are in our thoughts.

    For All His Family;
    It is with great sadness & an aching heart, that today we say goodbye…
    You’re in our thoughts & prayers, as we gather here to cry…
    Yes, we mourn his passing but, the tears are not for him…
    As we share them with each other, we see that impish grin…
    His laughter fills the silence, when words are hard to find…
    Remember that he loved us all,
    For he was, the loving kind…
    For Enlightenment, Courage & Love…
