May 8, 1976 – February 23, 2013
It is with great sadness that the family of Svitlana (Sveta) Povarova, beloved wife of Jim Masikewich and mother of Angelina Masikewich, announces her passing on February 23, 2013, at the age of 36 years.
Sveta was born in 1976 in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan. At age three, her family moved to Komsomolsk, Ukraine, where she spent the rest of her childhood and early adult years. Sveta was known to be very gentle and kind, with a love for reading, writing and music. She enjoyed a happy childhood with her parents and two brothers, taking many vacations together and keeping pets of all kinds. Sveta had an especially close relationship with her Grandfather, Pavel, and Grandmother, Antonina.
After completing primary school in 1993, Sveta went on to study Industrial and Civil Engineering at Komsomolsk Polytechnic College. She achieved such high grades that she was invited to study at Kharkiv University free of charge. Again she studied Industrial and Civil Engineering. She graduated university in 2001. It was during these years that Sveta became a Christian and came to know Jesus Christ as her savior and friend. She was baptized in 1998.
Sveta met Jim in January of 2005. In August, Jim travelled to Ukraine and the two vacationed throughout the Southern portion of the country, spending time with Sveta’s family at their summer home. The two were engaged that September. The following spring, with Sveta’s family and Jim’s two daughters in attendance, the two were married in Kremenchug, Ukraine, on May 12, 2006.
Sveta moved to Canada in July of 2007 and immediately fell in love with the Alberta countryside and Rocky Mountains. She and Jim travelled to British Columbia and shared in the same love and appreciation of the West Coast’s beauty. Jim, Sveta, and Angie took many vacations together and Sveta was happiest when the three were camping in their trailer in Kananaskis.
Sveta’s greatest accomplishment was her daughter, Angelina, who was born on January 18, 2008. She found the most joy in caring for Angie and being the very best mom she could be.
After an extended period of failing health, Sveta went to be with her heavenly Father on February 23, 2013. During her time of illness, Sveta was known to all who knew her to be a marvelous example of grace and strength. Her family was truly blessed by her gentleness, selflessness kindness, and love.
Besides her loving husband, Sveta is also survived in Canada by one daughter, Angelina, two stepdaughters; Jenifer and Kayla (Jason), one stepson, Robert (Amber), one granddaughter, Grace, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived in Ukraine by her father Sergi, mother Lyudmyla, brothers; Oleg (Natasha) and Sacha, niece Victoria, nephew Ilya, uncle Sacha, aunt Sveta and cousin Oksana.
The family would like to thank the kind people at the Ripple Centre and First Baptist Church of Calgary for upholding Svitlana in prayer week after week, year after year. And to all of the medical staff that attended to her during her illness.
