POPE, Mary Grace (nee Harrison)

December 3, 1925 – Ottawa, ON
March 24, 2014– Calgary, AB

It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Mary Grace Pope announce her passing on Monday, March 24, 2014. Mary (“Momma Pope”) passed away suddenly but peacefully at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta several days after hip replacement surgery.

Mary is survived by her four children, Pat (Mary Stalker), Doug (Tracey), George (Donna) and Maryanne (the late John Petropoulos), and her grandchildren, Kylie, Melanie, Laura, Kimberly and Emily.

Mary was born in Ottawa to her beloved parents, Grace (“Nan Nan”) and Edward Harrison. Mary was a nursing graduate of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, class of 1949A, and then received her post-grad diploma in Public Health Nursing from McGill University. Mary had a long and varied career as an RN and worked in areas such as psychiatric, occupational health and geriatric care.

Mary loved animals and in her later years, so enjoyed the company of her cat, Buster, who passed away in January. Mary also loved traveling, reading, going to the theatre and had a lifelong passion for learning.

Although Momma Pope will be greatly missed by her family and friends, she will always be remembered as a strong, gregarious spirit who loved her family first and foremost and lived life to the fullest with compassion, honesty, a wonderful sense of humour and a passion for telling personal interest stories. Her spirit and zest for life will live on in all who loved her.

And that’s that.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church (7 Sunmills Green S.E.) on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The interment service will be held at Pinecrest Cemetery in Ottawa around Canada Day, 2014. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Calgary Humane Society, 4455 – 110th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7, Telephone: (403)205-4455, www.calgaryhumane.ca.

In living memory of Mary Pope, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

What a wonderful woman you mom is. Her great faith has always been an inspiration to me, so I know she lives on with God. She has been in my heart ever since she brought all you Pope kids to Ribbon Creek Hostel in the 1970s. I’d be with you on Friday, but I’m stuck at home with a broken arm.
    I love you all,
    Ruthie

I am saddened to hear of Mary’s passing. She was a great colleague at the Colonel Belcher Hospital and friend. I will always remember Mary with a great affection and admire her vitality for life. I so much wish I could be in Calgary for the service. My consolation is my chance reconnection with Maryanne and hope we will always stay in contact.
