POLAND, Peter Joseph

July 25, 1937 – St. Boniface, MB.
March 9, 2015 – Calgary, AB

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Poland on Monday, March 9, 2015 at age 77.

Peter is survived by his loving wife Dianne; his much loved daughters Leanne (Ian) Driscoll of Calgary, and Leslie Ruth of Minneapolis, MN; three cherished grandsons, Aidan Driscoll, Owen Ruth and Miles Ruth; and sister Patricia (Ed) Surowski of Cochrane, AB. He is also survived by Dianne’s family; two sisters Ollie Kachmar of Vancouver and Carol (Walter) Megley of Edmonton; one brother Dave (Bev) Smolarchuk of St. Albert and their respective families. He was predeceased by his parents Basil Poland and Mary Turner.

Peter attended St. Anne’s and St. Mary’s High School (Calgary) and St. Joseph’s (Edmonton). After high school, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he discovered the love of flying and later earned his pilot’s licence. His entire career was spent working in Alberta’s oil industry, travelling the entire country as well as taking on international assignments. He worked for Royalite Oil and Gas, The Conservation Board, Atlantic Richfield and Petro Canada. He was an avid sportsman, excelling in hockey, golf and baseball. Hockey was his passion and he played for many years with the Oakridge Oldtimers and later with the Calgary Seniors 55+. He enjoyed playing in hockey tournaments, especially the Annual Charles Schulz Snoopy’s Senior World Hockey Tournament in Santa Rosa, CA. Family was the centre of his life. He enjoyed many years relaxing at the family recreational home in Lake Windermere/Fairmont Hot Springs, golfing in Phoenix, holidaying with his family in California, Mexico, Hawaii and British Columbia, travelling Europe, playing sports or simply spending quiet time at home reading, working on his model airplanes, helping Dianne in the garden, teaching Aidan to golf and work with tools, watching Owen and Miles learn to play his favourite Sudoku. He was eager to lend a helping hand to those in need and volunteered at the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank.

Peter faced a brief battle with cancer with the same grace, dignity and courage that marked his life. He will be forever remembered as a loving and thoughtful husband, father, grandfather, friend, sportsman and gentleman.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W.) on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank Society, 5000 – 11 Street S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2Y5, Telephone: (403) 253-2059, www.calgaryfoodbank.com.

Good night our sweet solitary man, may you rest in peace with the angels.

In living memory of Peter Poland, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: 403-256-9575.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of great sadness and loss. I enjoyed working with Pete at Petro Canada for many years. I fondly remember him as a kind, gentle man who always had time and an answer for our questions. He had the neatest hand writing of any fellow I ever worked with. I’m so glad his precious grandsons had the chance to know their gramps. He will live on in them.
May your fond memories help you through these sad times. He was a wonderful man.

  12. Dear Mrs. Poland, Leanne, and Leslie,

I’m so sorry to hear about Mr. Poland’s passing. Mom emailed me the news on Monday, and I thought it was fitting that I happened to be at the Maui airport at the time I received the email. I remember with great fondness the trip we all took together to Maui waaaay back in 1978. Your Dad was a wonderful friend to my parents through some hard times, and I know how much they appreciated his friendship. I remember him fondly as a man of grace and integrity.

My deepest sympathies to you all in your time of sadness.

    Love,
    Cheryl

Peter hired me at Petro Canada in my late 20″s when he had more faith in me than perhaps I had….but this was Peter! He was a a wonderful person. Jen & I had the honour to know Peter who teated us so well. We had such good times when the industry was going gangbusters and Peter & I were on the East Coast of Canada or in Norway.
    He was such a Gentleman.

Thank you Peter for the opportunity to share these times with you in many parts of Canada and Internationally. You were a good Man! Proud to have known you. Thank you.
