POIRIER, Michael Paul

January 14, 1947 – Surrey, England
December 17, 2013 – Penticton, BC

Michael Paul Poirier passed away Tuesday December 17, 2013 after a brief and courageous battle with liver cancer. He leaves to mourn his partner of many years, Louise Robinson, his sons Kyle Paul Poirier (Kimberley) and Matthew Anders Poirier, their mother Cheryl; grandson, Gavin Paul Poirier and granddaughter Emily Michelle; his brother, Raymond Anthony Poirier; sister Vicki (Michael) Poirier-Wei, niece, Nicole and Louise’s children, Jennifer and Brett. Mike worked in the newspaper industry for 44 years; first at the Winnipeg Tribune and then at the Calgary Herald from 1980 until his retirement in 2009. For many years he was the Group Classified Sales Manager over several categories, and as such, was well known and had many friends in the Calgary Motor Dealer Association, the Calgary Home Builders Association, personnel agencies, and funeral homes. Mike spent many years volunteering as a soccer coach and manager for his boy’s teams and most recently volunteered as a Barista at the Cafe in Penticton Regional Hospital. He was a very creative, positive, fun loving person who enjoyed a good joke, just not at his expense. His proudest achievements as everyone knew, were his two sons and his grandchildren. Louise and Mike have had many wonderful trips but where Mike especially loved was their home in the Arizona desert. He so enjoyed tending his cactus garden and entertaining friends and family. Mike was genuinely loved and respected by so many and will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Mike’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday December 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation (Penticton Regional Hospital)

In living memory of Michael Poirier, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. Bonnie Sommerfeld :

    Dear Louise and family:
We had the utmost pleasure in working with Mike at the Calgary Herald for several years. You always knew when Mike was up to playing a joke on someone, as you could see him plotting the joke and then waiting around the corner to see the person’s response, his face beet red from laughter. Mike was a truly wonderful person all around. We will never forget his laugh. Sending you all our heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

  5. Carrolle Duffin :

We were surprised and saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. He was such a great guy.

We were privileged to both work with him and call him “friend”. We loved his sense of humour. Particularly, when he would pull out his “Folds of Honour” coin and laugh and get that twinkle. Not because of the free drink he was going to get, but because he knew that he had bested Frank. We also loved finding great “hole in the wall” eateries in North Mesa and sharing in his delight when we would share them with him.

We extend our condolences to all his family.

    Frank and Carrolle Duffin

  8. Hi Louise . I was so shocked when I came back to Calgary from Saskatoon where I spent time over the holidays and was getting caught up reading the Calgary Herald and came across Michael’s obituary. Life is precious and it seems like only a short time ago when all of you were still working at the Herald and Michael, yourself, and your friend Celine who represented the Herald attended the Toyota Presidents Golf Tournament . Those were great times and having the three of you there added a extra dimension of fun and laughter for the event.
I am sure many people will tell you they know what you are going through, however, I feel some people if they have not experienced a loved one passing from that dreaded disease do not fully know how difficult that journey is for the people that are close to the individual . I speak from experience my wife passed in Sept. 2013 after 2years plus dealing with that disease.
Louise I can only hope for you that there are better days on the horizon, and trust me there will be .
All the best Floyd Gibson Calgary.
