It is with regret that we announce the passing of Jim Plant on Thursday, July 12, 2007, at the age of 93 years.
Jim was born in Winnipeg on February 24, 1914. He moved to England in 1937 and enlisted with the RAF for training. Shot down over Germany in 1940, he spent the following five years as a POW in numerous camps and in 1943 was moved to Stalag Luft III, the prison camp which later became notorious for the Great Escape after the War, he returned to Calgary where he married his beloved Mildred. Pappy lived on an acreage outside of Okotoks for many years before returning to Calgary, where he lived at the Trinity Lodge and the Colonel Belcher Veterans Care Centre.
Jim is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Jim and Joan Plant; and granddaughters, Jennifer, Johanna, and Jessica; and daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Doug Bell. He was predeceased by his wife, Middy, in 1989.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Jim’s nurse and friend, Joan Parsons, for the support she provided. We also wish to thank the dedicated staff at Strathcona House in the Colonel Belcher Veterans Care Centre for the care and assistance they gave over the past few years.
