PINK – John Douglas

October 23, 1955 – October 16, 2009

John beloved husband of Jasna Bakic of Calgary, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the age of 53.

Consistent with how John handled life, he battled cancer with dignity, humour, determination, strength and courage. He was born in New Westminster, B.C. and moved to Kamloops in 1961 at the age of six. John graduated from Kamloops Sr. Secondary School in 1973 and furthered his studies at the University of Alberta earning a B. Ed in Secondary Science Education in 1978. John taught for a number of years at Brocklehurst Jr. High School in Kamloops. He pursued a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Calgary and completed his MBA in 1987. John held various positions in Calgary; most recently as a co-founder of Novapure Systems, a company specializing in mold detection and remediation.

John was predeceased by his mother Queenie Pink earlier this year and his father Tory in 1965.

John has left to mourn his wife Jasna Bakic, daughter Tanja Bakic, sister Brenda Pink and step-father Tom Lawrie. John, fondly known as “Rooster” is one of those rare individuals that deeply touched so many lives. He will be dearly missed by his relatives and by the extraordinarily large circle of close friends he gathered along life’s road.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to The Calgary Prostate Cancer Foundation (Suite 100, 1011 Glenmore Trail S.W., Calgary, AB T2V 4R6).

Special Thanks to Unit 47 of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Unit 101 of the Foothills Medical Centre, for the compassionate care shown to John and our family.

In living memory of John Pink, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

  8. Dear Jasna and Tanya,

I had the great fortune to work with John at Impact Blue and found a great friend and mentor. I took away many things from our days working together that have stayed with me over the years. I valued his creativity and insight as well as kindness towards the folks he worked with. I have often thought ‘what would John do’ and will continue to do so.

Please accept my thoughts and best wishes. If I were in Canada, I would be there in person but will be thinking of you on Thursday.

    Kind Regards,
    Daryn Edgar

  11. John was one of those very special people who held his friends dear, one who could be counted on for anything. He was the photographer at our wedding, traveling thousands of miles by himself to the Ottawa Valley just to fulfill a promise once made. John, the “Godfather of the Kamloops’ Mafia” kept the gang in touch by being the hub of all information.

Our family never missed a New Year’s phone call from John or a visit with “Uncle Rooster” on our way through Calgary. He had the rare ability to connect with both young and old, talk on any subject, and make you laugh at the absurdity of life.

Brenda, Jasna and Tanya, you have our deepest sympathy. Rooster will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Jasna, Tanja & Brenda, our hearts go out to you. John was such a special person who can never be forgotten. Dear Jasna, Tanja and family,

I had the pleasure of being one of John’s students in the Entrepreneurial Program at MRC in 1996-97. He was one of the few teachers in my life who have really stood out. I’ll never forget that beaming smile!

I want to let you know that due to his outstanding teaching skills (and his persistence that we have a good business plan), I am now running my own business. I never would have started my own business if it wasn’t for his efforts.

I will always remember John as a wonderful teacher, and I wanted you to know that his efforts helped me greatly throughout the years.

    Please accept my condolences.

John obviously had a huge impact on so many people, myself included, but no one feels this loss more than you. In the years I was privileged to know John, we often spoke of our families. Let me tell you, he was always enormously proud of both of you, and without fail described his good fortune to have you in his life.

My condolences on the unfortunate – and way too soon – passing of John Pink. I was a student of his, back in the early 1980’s, when he was a science instructor at Brocklehurst Secondary. I remember his great smile and the way he always use to tease / joke around with all of the girls. If memory serves me well, he always did his best to make science – chemistry – fun. Thank you for allowing me to share my memories of Mr. Pink – he was a great teacher.

The two of us grew up with John from Grade 1 through to grade 11. He was always a good friend – one we regret losing contact with. As I read through other condolences I recognize many of the other contributors as ones from those days and I also recognize that some of those childhood friendships are long-lasting. I crossed paths with John in the 1980’s a few times and we re-connected in 2006. He was a positive person, big-hearted and what a sense of humour! I will miss him. My sincere condolences. 40. I didn’t know John personally, but I went to V.V.J.S. school with his sister, Brenda.

I am so sorry to hear about the untimely passing of John, and also of his mother, Queenie, who is a very well known person in Kamloops.

I am the Archivist at the Kamloops Museum & Archives, and recently a member of the public dropped off a donation of personal materials regarding both Queenie and John. As I wasn’t here when the materials were droppped off, I don’t know where the donor got them, but I think they may be of interest to the family.

There are photographs, school records and memorabilia in the donation.

Please contact me if you would like to discuss these materials. I’m not sure where Brenda is living now, but I was not able to find her in the Kamloops directory.

What a wonderful tribute this is to John’s life. I hope it can provide some comfort to his loved ones.
