Updated 06/21/13 6:00pm – Services will proceed as scheduled below:

John Adam Pichnej, beloved husband of Margaret Pichnej (nee Kearns) and first wife Lois Pichnej (nee Halbert) passed away peacefully at the Tom Baker Centre in Calgary on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

John was born in Montreal on January 20, 1946 to Patricia and Adam Pichnej. After graduating from Sir George Williams in Montreal as a Civil Engineer, he furthered his education in Ann Arbor, Michigan earning a Masters Degree in Construction Management. He moved his family to Calgary in 1977 to join Fluor Canada. He spent over thirty-four years at Fluor as a Project Manager, Project Engineer and Project Control Team Leader for various heavy oil, conventional oil, energy, chemical, mining, and petrochemical projects and holds a life time membership with APPEGA. He was highly respected in his field and mentored many individuals along the path of his career. As a Project Manager, John worked on projects in eastern Canada and the USA, before he had the opportunity to take an assignment in Melbourne, Australia. This assignment also offered him and Margaret the opportunity to visit with family and friends in Australia, as well as explore this amazing country. He enjoyed numerous camping and hiking trips with family and friends over the years, and John’s love of the great outdoors was reflected through his extensive art collection. He was also an avid boat, motor bike and exotic car enthusiast. A later in life treat to himself was his 911 Carrera S Porsche.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Pichnej, brother Gregory Pichnej (Joanne) of New Castle, Ontario; children Michael John Pichnej (Elke), Christine Patricia Markin (Tyson); step daughters Alison Danielle Hilderman (Steven) and Paige Elise Hilderman and grandchildren.

John is predeceased by his parents Adam and Patricia Pichnej and first wife Lois Pichnej (nee Halbert).

  4. I’m very sorry and sad to hear of John’s passing.
I will always remember John’s enthusiasm for life, and yes those wild Hawaiian shirts. I could never find one to out do him, especially the one with the lobsters on it. I remember him driving his motorcycle to work and the freedom, I know he had when he rode it, with the wind in his face and the open road before him.
May you ride with the Angels now John.

  5. Shawna Sommerstad :

In 2009, I worked for Fluor and John was the project manager of the project I first became a Document Control Lead on.

John was very hard on me, and I often felt very nervous when he came to see me, or when he called. Sometimes, I wouldn’t answer when I saw his name displayed on the phone! Luckily, I was close to his office and he would peer over my cubicle when I didn’t answer the phone!

Over the course of the project, John taught me some very important lessons. I was extremely meek, and John knew it. He was trying very hard to help me to ‘toughen up,’ and he definitely achieved his goal. Without his push and guidance, I would not have progressed in my career the way I have, and I am extremely grateful for his influence.

At the end of the project, John said to me “Shawna, you have gained 10 pounds of skin since the beginning of this project.” That was the best compliment I could have received from him and I still think about it.

I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing and my deepest condolences to his family at this time. John touched a lot of people, and he will be very missed.

By the way, I never could find a crazy shirt to match him on Crazy Shirt day, and I doubt I ever will.
