It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Davey Phillips, loving and devoted husband and father, on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the age of 54 years.
John Phillips was born and raised in Belleville, ON. He loved the Quinte Area, where family reconnected and re-energized each summer at the cottage. He attended Queen’s University where he received his degrees in Commerce (1975) and Law (1978). His support for Queen’s culminated in committee work, where he helped to develop the Alberta Scholar at Laws programme. John was a man of integrity and grace and he possessed a moral compass that guided so many along difficult journeys. For his family, friends, colleagues and clients he provided trusted counsel and mentorship. His tremendous sense of humour and fun, and the ability to set others at ease, were gifts he generously shared with us all. John was a tireless volunteer, committed to leadership in each organization he served. This responsibility he took seriously, serving as a Warden at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer, Bencher for the Law Society of Alberta, and most recently as Chair of the Trinity Place Foundation. He also found a new avenue for his expertise and quiet authority at Miller Thomson.
John is survived by his loving wife Lynne Phillips; sons Rob and Andrew; brother Bill and his wife Susan; niece and nephew, Sue (Garagan) and Jeff and their families; aunt, Barbara Cowle; cousin Bruce Cowle and his wife Donna and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert William and Mary Jane Phillips (nee Kimmerly). He will be missed beyond words.
