PHILLIPS, Raymond Stanley

October 31, 1924 – March 8, 2013

Raymond Phillips, beloved husband of Kae, passed away peacefully at home on March 8, 2013 at the age of 88, surrounded by his family.

Ray was born in Edmonton on October 31, 1924 and moved as a young boy to Carrot Creek, Alberta. He met Kae while attending high school in Edson and they were married September 20, 1947. They recently celebrated 65 years together.

Ray graduated from the University of Alberta in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and applied his education in the Alberta Oilfields for many years before striking out on his own, establishing Delph Industries, an oil field service company. Later he worked for the Technical Service Council and then AOSTRA.

Ray loved to travel and he and Kae enjoyed many trips to destinations all over the world. He also enjoyed many hobbies including photography, bridge, woodworking, chocolate making, square dancing, skiing and golf. In recent years Ray launched his own web site (, which demonstrates both his love of nature and photography as well as his entrepreneurial spirit.

Throughout Ray’s life he was active in many charitable and community organizations, most notably the Schizophrenia Society, where an award for outstanding volunteer service was created in his name (the Phillips-Thompson Award), and the Weaselhead Society.

Ray is survived by his loving wife, Kae, sister Vera Walsh, daughters Lynne Tourond (Geoff) and Beth Harris (Bob), and son Doug Phillips (Leslie); eight grandchildren Michael Tourond (Jada), Brian Harris (Lyndsay), Alicia Tourond, Sandra Grills (Michael), Dianna Farquhar (Geordie), Alexander Phillips, Tim Phillips and Gordon Phillips, and eleven great grandchildren, Tyler, Gage, Kashai, Julia, Isaiah, Aiden, Juno, Ayla, Dharma, Faith and Bella. He was predeceased by his sister Renee.

His family was a great source of pride and pleasure. He was always interested in hearing about the latest adventure, business or personal, and provided many words of valuable advice. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Rocky Ridge Retirement Community and the Palliative Care Team for their support and kindness.
