July 31, 1928– Landmark, MB
December 1, 2013 – Calgary, AB
Herbert Reimer Penner, beloved husband of Martha Loewen Penner, and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, December 1, 2013, with family at his side.
Herbert Penner was born on July 31, 1928, to Abram and Mary Penner of Landmark, Manitoba. He lived for the first years of his life in Landmark, going to school, and working with his dad on the farm and in northern lumber camps. Life in the lumber camps yielded endless stories of practical jokes, close calls and risk taking adventures, which entertained his children and grandchildren for the rest of his life. Herbert attended Steinbach Bible Academy, where he met Martha Loewen, whom he married in June of 1951. Immediately after their marriage, Herbert and Martha headed north to live and work in the Penner lumber camps. When their young girls were old enough to start school, they settled on a farm near Butler, Manitoba. Not satisfied with simply farming, Herbert started a number of other businesses, first a lumber yard, and then a feed mill. Later Herbert and Martha embarked on a new adventure, moving to Alberta, where Herb’s own father had been born. Here Herbert worked in a number of different businesses, eventually retiring in Calgary, close to many of their children and grandchildren.
Herbert approached life with eagerness and enthusiasm. He never walked if he could run or sat still if he could do another job. He worked hard, but he also loved to spend time in recreation with family and friends, whether it was waterskiing at Kenosee Lake or snowskiing in the Alberta Rockies. He loved going out for dinner with friends or family. Over the years, Herb and Martha travelled to Europe, the Middle East, South and Central America, the United States, and Canada, sometimes with children and grandchildren in tow. Recently, Herbert and Martha celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, travelling in style to Whistler, BC.
Herbert will be remembered most of all for his steady faith, helping hand, kindness and love. He began every day with the word of God and lived out that word in his daily actions. He was an example of Jesus Christ to all those he encountered. We know that today he is resting safe in the arms of Jesus, free from pain and full of joy. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Herbert will be lovingly remembered by Martha, his wife of sixty-two years; three daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Mark Kroeker, Stella Penner, and Lois and Sterling Toews; six grandchildren and their partners, Steven and Andrea Kroeker, Brian and Sarah Kroeker, Michael and Andrea Kroeker, Katie and Kameron Sheffler, Benjamin Toews and Brittany, and Rebecca and Blair Berglund; and seven great-grandchildren, Lynsey, Eric Jackson Herbert, Adam, Alexander, Nathan, Matthew and Deklan.
He is also survived by five brothers, Ed, Les, Wilmer, Ron and Dennis, and a host of family and friends. He was predeceased by one sister, Mildred.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
