April 21, 1915 – April 28, 2013

Mary Peddlesden died peacefully on Sunday April 28th 2013 at the age of 98.

Mary was born at home, in Calgary, April 21, 1915, new little sister to big brothers Walter, Tom and George. Her mother Jane Ellen Morris (Thompson) was tickled that Mary shared a birthday with “the little princess,” Elizabeth Windsor. Mary attended Sunnyside Elementary School. She fondly recalled that her father, Tom, would often take her along to sit in the pit when he played his trumpet for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Grand Theatre. She remembered well a huge elephant on stage, very near her chair where she sat in the orchestra with her father during Aida. Mary graduated from Crescent Heights High School in 1933. Following high school she stayed home, helping her ailing mother with the household chores. After a short working career, in 1938 Mary married Stephen Peddlesden. She was attracted by his wonderful sense of humour and happy approach to life. Much to the dismay of the elder Peddlesdens, Stephen and Mary moved from Hillhurst out to the then, south edge of Calgary (Lower Elboya) to build their family home on 5A Street. Mary was a methodical, organized person who expected as much from those around her as she provided in her firm handed and economical management of the home. She was the general in the kitchen and an avid bridge player. She curled, bowled, and swam at the Glencoe Club and hosted many a bridge party in their lovely home. In the 70s she volunteered with her friend Ginny Campbell for Meals on Wheels. Mary’s beloved husband Stephen died in 1982 of Alzheimer’s. Mary continued to live at home in until December 2002 when she moved to The Manor at Garrison Woods for four happy years, to Staywell Manor for two years and finally spending her last years in Chinook Care Centre. She very much enjoyed her years in Garrison Woods, winning many a Monday bridge game and entertaining family in the dining room.

Mary is survived by her children Diane Draffin of Kelowna, Valerie Arsenault (Larry) of Calgary and Bill Peddlesden (Jennifer) of Chestermere; her sister-in-law Barbara Peddlesden; numerous nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Colin (Michelle) Draffin, Carolyn Draffin (Jason), Stephen Arsenault, Michael Arsenault (Elizabeth), Max Peddlesden (Shannon), Ada Peddlesden, and seven great-grandchildren; Allyson, Aidan, Rhys, Charles, Orson, Addison and Chase to whom she was fondly known as G-G.

Mary was predeceased by her parents Jane Ellen and Tom, her husband Stephen, her brothers George, Walter and Tom, and her son-in-law Doug Draffin.
