PEARCE, Leo Alfred

July 6, 1925 – Calgary, AB
September 26, 2013 – Cochrane, AB

Leo Pearce, beloved husband of Margaret, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the age of 88 years.

Born in Calgary, Leo lived his younger years on the farm in Sunnynook, Alberta. He attended high school in Hanna, where he met the sweetheart of his life, Margaret Isabel Hemstock. After graduating, Leo attended the University of Alberta, graduating with his Civil Engineering degree in 1948. Leo and Margaret were married in Hanna on April 24, 1950. He had a distinguished career with Parks Canada as a Resident Civil Engineer which led he and Margaret to life in many of the western National parks including Riding Mountain, Banff and Jasper. Throughout his life, Leo enjoyed the outdoors and was grateful to live in the beauty of the National Parks. He loved to hike, fish, cross-country ski, golf and curl. Leo always worked hard whether it be on various woodworking projects, gardening, community activities or the substantial effort he put into researching and recording the family books of genealogy. He always supported his children’s endeavors and offered a gentle listening ear and much encouragement to them. Leo loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, with many family picnics, day trips and contested card games. Leo and Margaret were long time members of St. David’s United Church. In later years, Leo and Margaret enjoyed hiking with friends and family members and traveling throughout Canada and the United States in their camper van. They also were fortunate to be able to travel to many other destinations including Hawaii and Europe. Leo was a quiet, generous and humble man who was devoted to Margaret, his wife of sixty-three years and his family and friends. He was well respected by all who knew him and was truly a gentleman.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Margaret; son Douglas, daughter Brenda Watson (Bruce), and daughter Patricia Farley (Patrick); grandchildren Robyn and Reid Pearce, Scott Watson (Jeanne), Heather Grabinsky (Jason), Shawn Watson (Tegan), Laura and Sarah Farley; three great-grandchildren Isabelle and Emily Grabinsky, and Leo’s namesake Leo Watson; brother-in-law Alan Hemstock (Diane); sister-in-law Emily Hemstock; and many nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by his parents James Milton Pearce and Eva Belle Graham Pearce; and brother Orlin Graham Pearce.

A Celebration of Leo’s Life will be held at Bethany Care Centre Chapel (302 Quigley Drive, Cochrane, AB), on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family wish to extend their thanks to the staff at Bethany Care Centre for their many years of kind care and comfort.

In living memory of Leo Pearce, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane Funeral Home, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE. Telephone: (403) 932-4740.

  5. Janice and Jim Heck :

The Heck family would like to express their deepest condolences and sympathy to you all. My late parents, Isabelle (Belle) and Robert (Bob) Mathie were very close friends of Leo and Margaret for more than 50 wonderful years. Leo and my father hiked the West Coast Trail together, cross-country skiied in the Rockies, and went on hikes with Belle, Margaret, and members of the Hemstock family. I heard many a heartwarming story, witnessed lots of laughter, and shared in the milestones as the Pearce children grew up and started their own families.

Please know that our thoughts are with you in this difficult time, and we hope that your fond and cherished memories will keep Leo vividly in your hearts.

    Sincerely,

Janice, Jim, Erik, Kendra, Rayna, Karel, Danielle, and Ben Heck
