PAVEY, Michael Arnold

May 6, 1947 – Montreal, Quebec
February 22, 2015 – Okotoks, Alberta

Michael Arnold Pavey beloved husband of Linda, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the age of 67 years.

Michael was born in Montreal and grew up in Toronto with his three beloved brothers. It was back in Montreal where he and Linda started and raised their family, with a brief interlude in Newfoundland, before moving on to Calgary in 1991. In 1999, Michael and Linda returned east to live in Moncton, before finally returning to Calgary in late 2014 to be nearer to family.

Michael retired as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Major Drilling Group International Inc. in 2006, where he had worked since 1999. Prior to that, Michael held senior executive positions with TransAlta Corporation. Michael served as a Director of Maritime Electric Company Limited from 2001 to February 2007, and as a Director of Fortis Inc. from 2004 until the time of his passing. Michael held a Master of Business Administration from McGill University and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Waterloo.

Michael and Linda spent their retirement years spending as much time as possible with their grandchildren, travelling around the world, and taking their yearly pilgrimage to their cherished winter home in Florida. There, Michael and Linda enjoyed the visits from their family and friends, golfing, bicycle rides, and a good glass of wine. Michael was also an avid supporter of the New England Patriots, and took great satisfaction in the last weeks of his life with their Superbowl victory!

Michael will be sorely missed by his wife of forty-three years Linda (nee McCaskill); daughter Shannon (Howie) Thomas; three sons, Matthew (Amber), Mark, Ian (Robyn); five grandchildren, Sarah, Grace, Kirsten, Jackson, Carson; three brothers Don (Libby), Dana (Sheran), and Brian; sister Bronwyn; mother-in-law Chick McCaskill; brother-in-law Earl (Doreen) McCaskill; and many other extended family. He was predeceased by his father Arnold and mother Mary.

Michael will be deeply missed and always loved.

Private family memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2015. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, P.O. Box 274, Okotoks, AB, T1S 1S1, Telephone: (403) 995-4673, www.countryhospice.org. 37. I was sad to read of Michael’s passing in the Globe & Mail today. I lost track of Michael after we attended Waterloo and now I know why as he was on the move.

Michael was also a Queen Scout and we experienced the great influence of leaders and friends in the 1st Applewood Scout Troop. In fact Michael and I partnered on our First Class Journey through the bush using a map scaled in “chains”; watching each other’s back as we followed bear scats down a road; climbed rock faces; and explained how we lost our tent on our return.

I am sure that Michael left the world in better shape than he found it. It was great to have known Michael and to have shared the road together.

  41. Shawn and Laura McCaskill :

Dear Aunt Linda and Shannon, Matthew, Mark and Ian:

We are so sad and sorry about the passing of Uncle Michael. My fondest childhood memories involve all of us gathering together at the Funny Farm or going on vacations together (like the house boat back in the 1980s, expertly navigated and steered by your Dad, with 7 kids and 2 dogs in the background). Uncle Michael was always willing, and certainly able, to discuss business and politics, the latter especially with Granny to fluster her and amuse the rest of us at the same time. As we all got older, it was always great to see the family gather for weddings, and I enjoyed your Dad’s insightful and humorous speeches and toasts.

Uncle Michael was a true patriarch, and lived his life for the betterment of his family. Laura and I and our children are grateful to have been a part of his life and his family. May God bless him and all of you.

I have been thinking of Mike all week and wanted to express my heart felt condolences to you and your family. It is still hard to process the news. Mike had a tremendous influence on me over the years. As a client he was always fair minded and principled and frankly fun to be around. More importantly as a friend and mentor he took a genuine interest in the people around him and found his way to make his points when needed. On more than one occasion I remember Mike dispensing advice to me that was always well intentioned and well received. You will remember that after my heart attack you both visited us in Toronto and Mike made sure I heard the importance of placing family and health above work which was well appreciated.

I will remember my friend Mike all my days, golfing at Royal Oaks, kibitzing about our Patriots, and sharing the odd glass of wine and a cigar. He was passionate about his family and talked incessantly about each and every one of you. I know he was intensely proud of the life you built together.

May the many many great memories support you through this difficult period.
