PAVELICH, Ryan Joseph

May 31, 1966 – Calgary, AB
March 17, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Ryan Joseph Pavelich beloved partner of Yasmin Dahl of Calgary passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 at the age of 47 years.

Ryan graduated from Okotoks High School in 1984 and went on to the University of Calgary, graduating with a degree in Computer Science. He immediately began his career with Pan Canadian Energy. His career progressed rapidly and in 2002 he was instrumental in the IT work to merge PanCanadian with Alberta Energy to form what is now Encana. Ryan then led the IT program to spin off the business which is now Cenovus, in 2009. At the time of his passing, Ryan was Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Encana. Ryan leaves a legacy of great friendships and caring about his people, as well as playing an integral role in creating an IT organization that accomplished results that many viewed as impossible. Ryan was all about giving back to the community, and was a dedicated volunteer at the Mustard Seed, where he built strong connections that were near and dear to his heart. Family and friends were of ultimate importance to Ryan and was always willing to help and support those in need. He had a love of the outdoors and sports, playing hockey and mountain biking. He enjoyed travelling and seeing the world on his motor bike.

Ryan is survived by his partner Yasmin Dahl, mother Darlene Pavelich, sister and brother-in-law Shelley and Darryl Poburan, two nephews Michael and Connor Boyd, also numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. He was predeceased by his father Joseph Pavelich August, 2009.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Drive NW) on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. 11. Neal Thompson :

I wanted to express my sympathy to you during this time of great loss. Ryan is someone who everyone in IT respects and looks up to. We take for granted how smoothing IT runs here at Encana and much of that can be attributed to Ryan’s leadership and his solid understanding of our infrastructure. I believe it to be rare to have a leader who’s strong technical ability is matched by his business and economic skills. Ryan certainly had that.

I remember clearly Ryan and other IT leads going from office to office during the Encana / Cenovus split delivering goodies and gifts as appreciation for the long hours that we were putting in on that project. He also had an open door policy and wanted to speak to those at the front lines and ground levels of IT which was very well recieved.

Playing hockey with Ryan was a pleasure. He was a very skilled defenseman and was one who would diffuse a tense situation rather than instigate. He was a competitive respectful player who had the ability to see where the play was going and where to be in position to defend our zone.

I wish all the best to you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Neal Thompson

My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Ryan. Ryan was a colleague during my days at PanCanadian and through the merger to Encana. Ryan was always conscientious and dedicated to making a difference. It was no surprise he was able to make it to the level of a CIO at Encana. At the same time he was a down to earth person and many of his colleagues will have fond memories of him. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and my heart goes out to those that were really close to him.

We, both residents and staff of the Permanent Supportive Housing Department at the Mustard Seed, are all deeply greived by Ryan’s passing. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Mustard Seed for 2 years. He provided 2 laptops for the residents to use and would give computer lessons on a weekly basis. Residents would often inquire about when Ryan would be coming in next. We as a team were so blessed to have Ryan share his time with us and our residents. He will be deeply missed.

  34. My deepest sympathy to Ryan’s family at this incredibly sad time.

It was my privilege to work with Ryan at EnCana starting in 2003. I was impressed with Ryan from the first meeting I attended. He was brilliant, dynamic, engaging, inclusive, accepting and compassionate. The work got done but never at the expense of the individual. When I shared this dreadful news with co-workers, they immediately responded with their story of the powerful and positive impact that Ryan had on their career and their lives. We are so very sorry.
