PAULO, Marshal Harley

1948 – Preeceville, SK
2013 – Calgary, AB

Marshal Paulo, beloved husband of Rita Paulo of Calgary, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 22, 2013, at the age of 64 years.

Besides his loving wife of forty years, Marshal is survived by nephews, Wayne (Brenda) O’Neil, Mark Paulo, George (Pat) Paulo, Allan Paulo, Lonnie (Valerie) Unger, Karlin (Tiffany) Unger; nieces, Brenda (Ian) Paulo-Begg, Maggie (Mitch) Burtnick, Dondi Unger and their families; mother-in-law Linda Hamm and sisters-in-law, Rolande Paulo and Janice (Pete) Unger. He was predeceased by his parents Mike and Pauline Paulo; brother George and father-in-law Alex Hamm.

Marshal and Rita moved to Calgary from Saskatoon in 1976 when Marshal was hired as an accident investigator for Transport Canada through the University of Calgary, Health Science Department. In 1979, he began his own company Collision Analysis. He provided expert consulting throughout Canada and the United States. Through his travels he met many people and formed many long lasting friendships. His interests were many from boating in Marina del Rey, California, to hunting and farming in Saskatchewan.

His retirement in 2010 allowed him to work on 31 years of accumulated projects. He frequently wondered how he had found time to work. He enjoyed life to the fullest and was busy preparing for several travel adventures when God called him home.

We appreciate all the efforts of an unknown angel at the side of the road on Thursday, July 18th, who performed CPR and called EMS after Marshal experienced a cardiac arrest. However, even the tremendous efforts of the wonderful staff at Foothills Hospital ER and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit could not save him.

He will be forever in our hearts.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, July 26, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. One of Marshal’s favorite charities was Stars Air Ambulance. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com

In living memory of Marshal Paulo, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Memories of Marshal and Rita have dominated my thoughts since the first shocking news last Thursday. One funny thought has intruded, and that relates to another tragic event, Jurgen’s death in 2000. When it was far enough past to joke, Marshal repeatedly said he was going to chase Jurgen around heaven in order to make him finish the report he had left unfinished on earth.

    What a remarkable man!

I am so, so sad to hear of Marshal’s death. He really was a larger-than-life character; a booming voice ready to tell a joke or share a tale of adventure. Marshal and Rita hosted our family many times over the years and my brother Brad and I grew up feeling as though they were an aunt and uncle, part of the extended family. He lived a full life, but one that was cut short much too soon.

  13. Brian Hendrick :

It is sad to hear of Marshall’s passing. Although younger than I, we both started working for Transport Vehicle Safety in 1976, he with our team in Calgary, I with the HQ team in Ottawa. We did some good work together, and his presence was always welcome at out team meetings. Back in those days people were unaware of the necessity for helmets, seat belts and infant car seats. He was a staunch advocate of these, and I thought his impatience with the slow movement of Federal laws urged him to move to the private sector. He was a active member of the SAE, and a contributor to the Accident Sub Committee. Trips to ‘Greek town’ in Detroit with him were priceless.

A good man, and a good friend.

  27. I now this is late, but I just learnt of Marshall’s passing moments ago. I first met Marshall in the early 1980’s ( we met at a pizza joint )to talk about a case- I was a young lawyer and he was my first experience with a real “expert”. Recently, a few years back (he must have just retired or perhaps he never really did), he checked out exploding windshields for me.

Marshall set a standard for experts that has stayed with me for my legal career. He gave advice as to what occurred and advised on what I night expect from the other side. When we talked last, we talked about his skidsteer – “everyone should have one”, he said.

I liked Marshall very much. It was a very sad moment in time to learn of his dying. Especially given he was at a time in his life when the joys of retirement were upon him. His loss must come as a shock and as a great sense of loss to his family and close friends. My sympathies are with you.

  28. I am a latecomer with condolences
Just today received the Green and White U of S alumni magazine where I heard of Marshals passing
A google search brought me to this site
We attended the U of S at h
The same time but did not meet until a year later in 1976 when me and Cliff Elian were taking borrowed motorcycles to San Fransisco
We stayed with you and Marshall in Calgary during the first week of July 1976 . I remember Marshal had a little black poodle that he trained to stand up and wear a sailors hat

Marshal stopped in to visit me here in Lloydminster about 8 years ago, he was shopping at Nelson Lumber for a cabin to have moved to a Lake near Yorkton

Sorry to hear of your loss
