PATTERSON – William Ernest

September 21, 1946 – December 11, 2010

It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved husband and father. Bill’s family was his greatest joy. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. He will be forever missed by his wife of 39 years, Alana; his children Steven Patterson, Robyn Gripton (Stuart) and Megan Patterson (fiancé – David Hjulfors). Bill is also survived by his sister Sharon Simpson, brother Dean Patterson (Lyndsay), and his brother’s in-law Alec and Cam McDonald (Coral) and sister in-law Elaine McDonald.

Born in Edmonton to Doris and James Patterson, the family moved to Calgary when Bill was a young boy. Bill attended Crescent Heights High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary in 1969. In 1973, Bill received a Charter Accountant designation beginning his career in public accounting. He spent the majority of his career in public accounting as a Tax Partner with a national and international firm. Leaving public practice in 1999 to pursue new challenges, Bill took the position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with a junior oil and gas company. With the sale of this company in 2004, Bill divided his time between CFO responsibilities for junior oil and gas companies and his own private practice. In addition, he served on several private and public company boards; where he held positions as Director or Trustee. Bill loved his work and throughout his career developed many life long friendships with colleagues and clients.

Active in his profession, Bill served as President of the Calgary CA Association, Treasurer/Board Member of the Canadian Petroleum Tax Society and on institute committees.

Bill was a great supporter of the arts, giving his time to the community as a former President of Theatre Calgary, Board Member/Treasurer of the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts, and until recently as President of Quest Theatre. Bill cherished his time spent with his children; coaching soccer, skiing and playing golf.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8 Street S.W.) on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire donations can be made to the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute, Health Research Innovation Centre (Esophageal Cancer Research), 3280 Hospital Drive, Calgary, AB. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Dr. Scot Dowden, the Palliative Homecare Team and the wonderful staff at Chinook Hospice.

    Dear Alana and family,

We had the pleasure of working with Bill for many years and like many of his clients and colleagues considered him a friend.

The world lost a kind and generous soul and we all have lost a friend, who left much earlier than any of us should. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We hope that in time your sorrow is replaced with the wonderful memories of Bill’s life.

  11. Ron Boghean C.A. :

Thank You So Very Much Bill.
I am of the same age as Bill but started the C.A. program some years after he. This resulted in my receiving courses from and being mentored by Bill while at Coopers Lybrand. Very few people have had a profound effect on my life, and Bill is most certainly one of those persons. I remain in public practice with two of my daughters, who have heard many times the approach Bill took in “working with people” and only “dealing with things”. It was this approach that resulted in his mentorship being treasured by me and others. He fostered our learning, pressure was not a means he employed. Learning from him allowed me to not only appreciate the integrity of our profession, but to love the ideal, relationships and challenges that our profession has to offer. I know that his mentorship found its way, through me, to my daughters, now in their mid 30’s. As we go through our daily practice, I will often refer to Bill as my teacher when I am receiving a thank you for having made a concept or tax law a little more clear. As you may be able to infer from the foregoing, working with my daughters is a cherished daily gift to me. I have and will continue to thank Bill, in the presents of my daughters, for being instrumental in my allowing my daughters to find the same love for our profession that Bill and I have.
Over the years Bill and I would meet and I would thank him, as would my wife on those occasions she was there. He would blush a bit, smile, and his eyes would glisten. I always knew that the joy he was expressing was one of happiness for my family and me. It was clear that he was happy that he was a part of a process but he would never be boastful of what he had brought about. Unfortunately, my daughters never did meet Bill. Although we cannot be with you this day of celebration, we, together with you, will celebrate Bill’s life every day of our lives. Thank you for having shared him with us.
May God grant you peace in knowing God most definitely has a place for Bill.

Dear Alana and Family We first met Bill working for The federal tax department where Bill was employed for a short time in 1970 perhaps. I again saw him about three years ago at Bruce Algers Christmas party. Bill was a great guy and it was our pleasure to have known him. He was too kind hearted to stay at the Tax Department. 20. Brian and Donna ross :

    Dear Patterson Family,
We just heard of Bill’s passing from our mutual friend, Donna Morgan. We have fond memories of many great times together with Bill at the University of Calgary when we were both members of the Phi Delta Beta Fraternity. Just the other day I was cleaning out my office and came across our annual fraternity photo from 2nd year at UofC. There was Bill and I remember thinking of him as one of the real solid guys in the group. We have lost track of one another over the years, but have heard good things from the Emes Brothers and Norris Morgan. I’m sure Bill will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Our hearts go with you all. Brian and Donna
