March 13, 1980 – Fredericton, New Brunswick
February 16, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
Miranda ‘Mandi’ Dawn Parker passed away peacefully Sunday February 16 at Tom Baker Cancer Centre palliative care unit, after a courageous battle of nearly 2 years with stage IV Metastatic Melanoma. To date there is no cure for this form of cancer.
Miranda will be remembered for her infectious smile, her beautiful spirit and love of life. Those who knew her best will remember her passion for what she believed in and her strength and determination to be the best mother possible even during her illness. Miranda graduated from Upper Miramichi Regional High School in Boiestown, New Brunswick (1998) and St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick (2002). After university Miranda taught English to grade school age children in South Korea, and at every opportunity travelled across south east Asia. Upon her return to Canada, Miranda worked and raised her children in Calgary until her illness became too much to bear.
During her illness Miranda became an advocate for sun safety, the dangers of tanning beds, and support for young mothers with terminal illness. Melanoma is a horrible disease and Miranda took pride in educating others about melanoma awareness and prevention.
Miranda is survived by her sons Corbin (6) & Ethan (1), daughter Alexis Chaisson (8), mother & step-father Debbie (Calhoun) & Terry Nason, father Barry Parker, brother & sister-in-law Rodney & Claire (Feagan), grand-parents Barbara (Pond) & Patrick O’Donnell, numerous aunts and uncles and cousins.
Thanks to family and friends who supported Miranda, Debbie, Corbin, and Ethan through the challenging days of Miranda’s illness & treatments. Special thanks to Dr. Tina Cheng, Dr. Jon-Paul Voroney, Dr. Shannon Puloski, and others on the oncology team for their diligence and dedication to Miranda’s treatment and care. Also thanks to the Palliative Home Care teams for their endless support visits and to the wonderful volunteers at Made by Momma for their never ending acts of kindness.
A memorial service in celebration of Miranda’s life will be held at a later date in the spring, in her beloved home of Ludlow, New Brunswick. Donations in Miranda’s memory may be made to Made by Momma (madebymomma.org) who were instrumental in supporting Miranda and her family or the Melanoma Network of Canada (melanomanetwork.ca).
