PARKER, Miranda Dawn

March 13, 1980 – Fredericton, New Brunswick
February 16, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Miranda ‘Mandi’ Dawn Parker passed away peacefully Sunday February 16 at Tom Baker Cancer Centre palliative care unit, after a courageous battle of nearly 2 years with stage IV Metastatic Melanoma. To date there is no cure for this form of cancer.

Miranda will be remembered for her infectious smile, her beautiful spirit and love of life. Those who knew her best will remember her passion for what she believed in and her strength and determination to be the best mother possible even during her illness. Miranda graduated from Upper Miramichi Regional High School in Boiestown, New Brunswick (1998) and St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick (2002). After university Miranda taught English to grade school age children in South Korea, and at every opportunity travelled across south east Asia. Upon her return to Canada, Miranda worked and raised her children in Calgary until her illness became too much to bear.

During her illness Miranda became an advocate for sun safety, the dangers of tanning beds, and support for young mothers with terminal illness. Melanoma is a horrible disease and Miranda took pride in educating others about melanoma awareness and prevention.

Miranda is survived by her sons Corbin (6) & Ethan (1), daughter Alexis Chaisson (8), mother & step-father Debbie (Calhoun) & Terry Nason, father Barry Parker, brother & sister-in-law Rodney & Claire (Feagan), grand-parents Barbara (Pond) & Patrick O’Donnell, numerous aunts and uncles and cousins.

Thanks to family and friends who supported Miranda, Debbie, Corbin, and Ethan through the challenging days of Miranda’s illness & treatments. Special thanks to Dr. Tina Cheng, Dr. Jon-Paul Voroney, Dr. Shannon Puloski, and others on the oncology team for their diligence and dedication to Miranda’s treatment and care. Also thanks to the Palliative Home Care teams for their endless support visits and to the wonderful volunteers at Made by Momma for their never ending acts of kindness.

A memorial service in celebration of Miranda’s life will be held at a later date in the spring, in her beloved home of Ludlow, New Brunswick. Donations in Miranda’s memory may be made to Made by Momma (madebymomma.org) who were instrumental in supporting Miranda and her family or the Melanoma Network of Canada (melanomanetwork.ca). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Miranda Parker, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 1-800-661-1599.

I taught Mandi at UMRHS and I have such fond memories of her. She was so bubbly and full of life. She was more like a friend than a student. I remember so many conversations we had and how personable she was. She could always make people laugh with her quick wit. She was truly a genuine young lady back then. Watching her grow up and then become a mother made my heart happy. I just know that she would have passed on to her children a love for life ~ just like she had. I was saddened to hear of her diagnosis and now, of her passing. My prayers go out to her children and all family members. May you be blessed with wonderful memories always. ♥

  22. My deepest heartfelt condolences to Mandi’s entire family. Mandi was one of the kindest people I will ever have the pleasure of knowing. Riding the bus to and from school growing up we would always keep each other in stitches which made those long drives some if the best memories I have. I love how you mentioned her conviction because there were also a couple of instances where she let me know right from wrong and steered me back on the right path. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and loved her. RIP Mandi, you have earned your place among the angels!

My heartfelt sympathy to Mandy’s beloved children, to Debbie, Rodney, Barbara, and your families and friends. As I read Mandy’s beautiful Obituary I could picture her best as an adorable little girl going to Sunday School in Ludlow. Treasured memories of “yesterday” fill my heart when my own parents, Sadie and Oboy and Mandy’s great-grandparents (Barbara’s Mum and Dad) Nan and Don Pond were the best of friends…and now they are all together in heaven, and I’m sure, are welcoming your precious Mandy with loving open-arms. Please know how very deeply the whole community has been touched by Mandy’s life and courage, by the utmost devotion by her Mum, and that we care, and share your great sorrow and loss. I pray that God’s comfort, strength, peace, and precious beautiful memories fill the hearts of all who loved this very special angel…”Mandy”. RIP

Words can’t express our heartfelt sympathy for you all. After losing touch for so many years, I feel very fortunate to have spent some time with Mandi these past 2 years. There are no words that I can say that will take away your pain. I met Mandi on FB through a Pass the Parasol Campaign I’m doing; she was my first international reciepient and we became friends. Her smile could light up a room. She loved her children so very deeply. I am, from the bottom of my heart, so very sorry for your loss. Mandi was a very bright beacon to so many others, all the while fighting her own storm. She’s left a mark in our Melanoma Community. I pray for peace for you and the rest of her family.

  96. It’s hard to know where to start and what to say…..Mandi was one of my best friends for what seems like forever. I can honestly say that I would not be where I am in life if it wasn’t for her. She was always there for me when I needed an honest opinion (which I knew she would give), if I needed to vent about a bad day or just to catch up on each other’s lives. For as long as I can remember she was one of the strongest people I knew and she made me a stronger person. She will never be forgotten, always be missed and forever be loved. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Although we never knew Miranda personally, it is evident that she was truly a special person. We pray that in the days to come you will find comfort and peace of heart in the good memories and love shared with Mandi.

  103. Debbie, we are so sorry to hear of Mandi’s passing. You, Mandi and your family have been in our thoughts as Mom and Dad provided us with updates of Mandi’s difficult journey. 105. Mandi was an inspiration to anyone that met her! I was honoured to treat her as a patient for many years, and I feel like I always got more from our visits than she did. She dedicated every ounce of her energy and time to raising and being present for her children. I’m glad she was given the time to be with them, but also know that she is finally at peace and free from her disease ridden body. You fought a valiant fight Mandi… And touched more lives than you will ever know . Now rest in peace.

I worked with Mandi for a time at Payless in Calgary. She was awesome to work with and was always there if you needed her. She was also a great mother to her boys. She will be dearly missed.

I still can’t believe that this is true. Miranda had a fierce and fiesty spirit that I admired and adored. She was a wonderful mother to her two little boys, and was simply an unforgettable human being. We had lots of great times together, and she will be dearly and sorely missed.

So long old friend. You were here for far too short a time, but you sure did make an impact with the time you had. I will never forget you.

Lots of love to your family.

We are so sorry for your loss. Mandi was a brave lady and fought hard from what I understand. My heart goes out to all of your family. It just is so unfair for the children to have their mom taken when she and they are so young. Hope everyone copes as best they can. Hugs to all

I am one of Miranda’s professors (psychology) at St. Thomas University. Miranda contacted me a couple of years ago when she learned that I was doing research on adolescent tanning and how to get youth to protect themselves. At that time, she told me about her battle with melanoma. She encouraged me to keep pursuing this research. I appreciated her honesty and encouragement. I’m so very sorry to learn of her passing. I will continue the research in Miranda’s memory. My sincere condolences to Miranda’s family and friends.
